How many of the planners here have a qualification in any of the things they talk about?

Certification in research design? An MBA? (or a business degree)? Social sciences? Economics? Statistics?

Anthro, econ, and critical design studies here. Stats is part of this but I suck in practice after years of letting my skills rust in terms of modeling (I can still order off the menu and know the analyses needed for the goals at hand.) I have never met a planner who had a great grasp on stats or research design. And FYI, research design is as vast and specialized as *design* design.

smart

Sociology and cultural studies, MAS strategy and planning, and I go to lots of talks, read lots and ask lots of questions. It’s about constant evolving learning and culture consumption.

Some (NOT ALL) Research people have these qualifications.

Also slightly self-critical as I basically feel that anyone who isn’t Andrew Gelman is full of shit in our industry. I have never heard agency folks debate confidence intervals, or even raise the idea of doing factor analysis before deploying a crazy new survey instrument, so obviously we suck at surveys that are reliable in any way, shape, or form.

We do that quite a bit, tbf. Confidence intervals are dull but we argue them all the time.

Who gives a shit? Just more institutions making money off of teaching what can be learned on the job, which implicitly marginalizes those that can’t afford the schools in the first place. I mean this in terms of the myriad of certifications ... not general academic study in college.

I am just looking into this process and would like some advice. I am in tax at a big 4 (5 years experience not all at big4) and looking to do an MBA to pivot. My undergrad is in STEM at non-target with a very unspectacular GPA of 3.2. I also had started a grad program for that STEM degree but dropped out and switched to accounting at the time. My question is, with that GPA and with this work history (understanding is that public accounting isn’t a great story for adcomms), what is realistic?
