It depends on the engagement
My guideline to my teams has been if it costs x to fly from your home city to the client location, and it costs no more than x to go somewhere else, have a lovely weekend somewhere else. My teams bust a nut for our clients and I'd rather have a happy staff instead of them feeling like they have to come to me to arbitrate a flight cost decision. I trust my team.
It's required by us. Partners usually give authority to Principals to decide
Every time.
Never
What does this mean?
Never
Thanks d1 and p3. Made me feel better about not following up with the partner
There's even a form we have to submit
This project, never. Last project, required to each time.
It is a perk but be careful, some companies are starting to not match the increase in taxable income as it's considered a fringe benefit. Basically you would have to pay tax on the flight cost. So if the flight cost $1000 you would need to pay maybe $250-300.
Depends on the project and your leadership. Mine on this project are nerds that never broke a rule in their life.
It's most definitely not within firm policy. It's an IRS thing. Flying anywhere other than home is considered a taxable expense. Read the policy P4, it's super easy to find. Type travel in lieu into kcurve
Every time, can get basic stuff approved by director who inform the partner/principle of the request and approval.

Do you book it as travel in lieu expense of regular flight?
I travel in lieu more than 75% of the time. Never ask for permission. Never expense as travel in lieu
Is in lieu travel what we call alt travel? If so, why would it ever be rejected it? I though it's a consulting perk.
Don't most people not do it "the right way" I thought firms don't care how you book it in expenses.
Whereas my current project couldn't care less
