So d4, ey4, sc1, etc. Thanks for the emotional responses. I'm glad that you have a strong enough understanding of me to grasp my whole person and aren't jumping to any idiotic reactions based on assumptions. I'll play if you want within of course the bounds of FB anonymity. D4 physics is your answers. And if you can tell me why Schrodinger's equation works, or Dirac I'd you want to be relativistic since you apparently know more about my field than I do. Or why the fundamental constants have the values they do (news flash they are basically fudge factors), I'll take it all back. Ey4 science isn't about answers it is about understand consistency. It's about discovering the relationships that generally hold and then diving deeper to figure out the relationships that don't - assuming of course that there is something deeper there ,and you aren't blindly looking for one of those things that Godel has proven well be true, but unprovable in any logic constructed from a finite set of axioms. Sc1 I don't know what to tell you other than the empirical evidence of your hypothesis is weak given my life.

Too often I've seen people walk away from the alters of their childhood just to cozy up to the alter of science, but based upon my class sizes in college I doubt they have any stronger understanding of science than the God or gods they walked away from. Science and religion have two different purposes, one tries to answer how things are the other tries to answer why they are. I simply don't see why they have to be in some kind of cage match, unless of course your intent is to beat one or the other into subjugation.

Also SA1 not a musician, but my wife is a wicked drummer.

@deloitte 4... so you're completely satisfied with the answers science gives you for how life came to be? Or even the universe, given just about everybody who would have a valid opinion on the subject would agree it had a beginning? how about photosynthesis, which we still only have a basic grasp of, pretty cool how some single celled organisms pulled that one out of their hats millions of years ago huh?!? Science got it allll figured out?! What about the unfettered application of the philosophy of evolution whereby the weak should reproduce less than the strong.. so let's go for eugenics and do nothing to reduce infant mortality? Next time my kid gets sick, i won't take him to the doctor lest we get in the way of evolutionary "progress!" Sound good?! Honestly, I am impressed with the satisfaction you have with the "ultimate" answers you're getting from science... curious what you think the answers are to these questions and philosophical quandaries. "Science" alone left me pretty let down on the points above, thank God for religion...Believing in the best science has to offer is basically saying "I have no clue, but I will chose to believe something mind bogglingly statistically improbable was pure luck"... vs religion: "I believe that the mind boggling statistical improbability was handled by something other than blind luck." Basically, I know that I'm not counting on luck in any of my important life decisions, not going to do it on the source of life either.

I'll only accept Pascal's wager as a legitimate reason why anyone's answer would be yes.

My gut reaction is to think a little less of a person at the first sign of religion. I get over it immediately of course and never act on my feelings because I firmly believe in people believing whatever they want to believe and I know plenty of great religious folks. However I personally think it's a waste of time, that any of the good can be achieved through other means/community efforts, and that it's too often a device of intolerance, hatred, violence, and science denial

Ever heard that joke: an atheist , a vegan, and a marathoner walk into a bar. You know how we know? They can't stop telling everyone. As someone who's two of those three and working to attain the 3rd, I don't talk about it. Neither should you.

I'm religious, but not spiritual. I know, opposite of most people. I accept religious tradition as a way of connecting with people and being part of a community, but I have never felt any connection to god or anything outside of the physical world.

I wasn't but now I am. Or, I guess, once was lost but now am found. Pascal's wager was not compelling for me. What was compelling was an examination of what I saw around me. I'll note for one of the respondents that much of what secularists pride themselves in today is simply a hollowed-out Christianity -- i.e., Christian principles divorced from their source in God. Whether they can survive the divorce is the experiment secularists have been running for the last hundred years or so. We'll see. I believe a purely secularist society, without grounding in the source of the principles, will morph into a repressive authoritarian state. I think we're seeming that developing over the last 20-30 years, and accelerating now.

Yep, and with a graduate degree in one of those hard sciences everybody tries to point to as having all the answers. When the general populace figures out how little we actually know about why things are the way they are, I'm betting that "science" will get the same rap as "religious". " Because that is the equation" sounds even hollower than "because God said so" to a society that largely can't do the required math themselves.

Hi everyone - Is anyone doing a workout program they’ve seen results from? I’m looking to tone up and lose about 10-15lbs. I follow some trainers and people on Instagram but it seems everyone posting about their great results are in their 20’s & 30’s - I used to see great results then too :) looking for suggestions from women in their 40’s+ .
