Almost always. Unless you’re going into a senior industry role where you could be a potential client in the future. If you’re going to a competitor or the PPMD is particularly pissed off they walk you out then and there. No goodbye emails, data transfers, reference letters etc.
In my practice, 4Ms left the last few months - Competitor, competitor, industry, competitor. All of them except the industry guy were locked out of their systems within a couple of hours and walked out the same day. Industry guy spent 2 and a half weeks drawing pay checks while chilling
My understanding is that even if they ask you to leave immediately most firms will continue pay through the notice period. Assuming a standard 2 week notice.
I was at EY, gave my two weeks and was terminated the next day. Did not get the 2 weeks pay. Understand your concern OP.
I could tell you that wasn’t the crappiest thing they did to me lol

Wouldn't worry about. Worst case you get extra time between jobs

Yeah, that may happen. Is OP living paycheck to paycheck? OP, what happens if you don't get that paycheck?
It happens, and that’s a risk you need to take for balancing a courtesy 2 weeks vs doing what’s best for your family. Especially if your role is easily replaceable (and in consulting it generally is).
My husband gave 2 weeks and they asked him to leave same day but paid out his notice period , which isn’t uncommon (he was going to a competitor)
Can you just not tell them that you are going to a competitor and ride the 2 weeks out?
