I have dictionaries. My pet peeve is when teachers tell students who can’t spell something to look up the word in the dictionary though.
My kids actually mainly use them for spelling because a lot of them can’t read well enough to understand the definition, at least at the beginning of the year. What helps is, instead of alphabet cards on my wall, I have sound cards that show different common spellings of a sound. They also show if certain spellings are mostly found at the beginning or ending of a word. They really help narrow down the choices of where to look in the dictionary.
I have dictionaries and yes they are used. Any time a kid asks me how to spell something I spell the word dictionary. 😂
I have both. The kids do actually use them from time to time.
I do. I try to force them to use it when it is applicable.
I have dictionaries! My students will use them sometimes. Sometimes I don’t let them use their chromebooks for definitions
I think I might still have one, but all my students have chrome books so I think it’s only use is giggling at naughty words
i feel like they are pointless when kids have personal devices, but soon they won't be able to alphabetize!
I have 6! And I do a dictionary challenge to make sure they actually know how to use them.
It’s in our standards to teach kids how to use dictionaries. A lot of my kids really love using them while they are writing.
I have a dictionary. They never use it.
We use them frequently.
I don’t have any and I wish I had a couple actually! My students often ask to use a dictionary to look up a word they don’t know while reading and I either have to explain it to them or tell them to get a Chromebook and google it 😅 I was impressed the first few times students asked to borrow a dictionary though, I assumed they would just ask to use a computer to search it!
Every time they asked me what a word means or how to spell something, I jokingly blow the dust off a dictionary and ask everyone if they know what this ancient tool is called as I parade it around the classroom displaying its red, glossy cover in all its glory. “You get a dictionary, and you get a dictionary! Everyone gets a dictionary!” And yes they can use their computers, too, but we just weren’t using them at the time
