I have to teach it every year and I teach high school. They want to take down everything... the...teacher... says... or... writes... because... it... might... be... im... por...tant. Drags out the hour to forever.
Amen!!
It’s vitally important in secondary. Honestly, most of us at high school level expect students to know how to take notes by the time they get to us. Yet, every year, I have to go over it
Well, that explains why secondary teachers end up with students who don’t know how to take notes. There are so many skills that have been thrown out for “stronger” (?) academic rigor. So very sad!
I did. I taught in 2nd grade and 4th grade. It is extremely important for content retention and information organization...in my opinion.
Honestly, my opinion is: put the notes in their own words, whether hand-written or typing them. Most of mine prefer to hand write them which truly impresses me. I do wish they could summarize better. They copy my PowerPoints verbatim. I try to explain that way doesn’t not do much for brain firing/connections but at least they have them down.
Yes and yes
I am a middle school social studies teacher and teach note taking in every grade level 6-8. Students hear "listen, read, process (rephrase) and write down" constantly in my class. They are
not allowed to copy my presentation word for word. I also teach them to summarize, code, shorthand, and personalize their notes. I teach and use several styles. Some notes are done through graphic organizers, some are reading notes (basic identification of essential info) and Cornell style...always with the encouragement for them to shorten and simplify. I tell them it is an essential skill or their arms or fingers will fall off before they get out of high school and college. I do allow them to type them if the prefer. Most students prefer to write them at this point. Good Luck! Next time there is a vertical alignment meeting try suggesting that lower grades and feeder schools teach it as a skill. Students and High school teachers frequently comment on how they can tell who had my class in middle school.
