I thought I "knew" but as a female Director with young kids it is becoming less and less clear if the cost/benefit is worth it for me. I see no one similar to me to emulate and some days I'm too worn down to be the first person to blaze the trail.

D1 - I obviously don't know all the details, but here's what I can say despite that. Ultimately, you need to like the people you work with and the work you're doing. Do you? If not, why not? Time to reassess immediately. If so, but you think you're not valued, examine the drivers of that. You said you're in a niche and implied it's not a very profitable one! That sounds like an issue right there. In the end, you'll be made Partner because your fellow Partners know you will be additive to the franchise you're all building together. So if you're doing unprofitable stuff, you need to fix that either by finding a way to make it profitable or changing what you're doing.

In the end, I define making an impact on the basis of helping clients solve their problems while being intellectually stimulated in the process of doing so. That's a generally profitable modus operandi, but you don't get to pick your clients' problems. So you need to be good at a wide enough variety of things such that you can do the above when their needs shift.

Maybe a fourth option - stay in consulting but not necessarily go for Partner in the traditional sense. Maybe a small boutique one day or go solo consulting on my own.

Thanks, P1. After two years, I am seeing that different accounts and type of project ultimately hold more weight at year end aka not all work is valued equally. I need to get more strategic about where I work and with whom I work. If I could boil it down to one question, it would be: how do you define "making an impact" and what kind of "impact" is actually valued by the firm? It sounds simple, but every time I think that I have cracked the code, it turns out that I was wrong.

If I'm able to get a better understanding of what life looks like at the Partner/MD level, then I would be able to provide a better answer. But with what I know, I'll stay in the "don't know" category.

I already left consulting once for industry. Now back for partner track. Still 4-5 years to go though (if all goes well).

The parts of my job I love and find deep satisfaction from are the parts I imagine grow with time as I become more senior (owning + managing client relations, being able to draw on past knowledge and pattern recognition for killer problem solving, driving part of the discussion at steercos and other big meetings). I also don't want kids (am female). Therefore unless presented with an opportunity I can't refuse, will try to make it to partner. Caveat is that I'm still near the top of the funnel, as currently in the entry level post MBA role.

I joined D wanting to make PPD. I think that I have the commitment and grit to do it, but it seems like the goal posts are constantly moving. If I could figure out a better lay of the land and how to actually be successful within this place, I'd be more excited about it...and it takes A LOT to zap my motivation. Want to help, P1? 🤔

So, confession: I used to look down on just being a "D" and not a "P," but the longer I am here, the more I am wondering if I should try to shoot for D. I'd also be interested in having a legit convo about how going for a P vs D should play into my career strategy.

D1 - Happy to help, though I'm not sure of the exact question you'd like my advice on.

@pwc1 - you should come to EY, lots of women with kids at SM/Director level and above. I am a woman with no kids and while it's hard I have seen the firm work with new parents and single parents in particular to get more flexibility.

Sidenote: I should note that I have been operating in a small part of the practice that is very niche and aligns with my industry background. I think that step is one moving to an account that is actually profitable.

P1- thanks so much for the answer- appreciate it! I'll write a longer response tomorrow, but yes, I am planning to switch accounts stat. I'm a little annoyed bc I feel like the SMs in this division knew the negatives of this practice, but didn't warn me bc it was in their interests bc I was doing a big portion of their grunt work or as some might say "operating at the next level". One of them is insisting that I see two of these projects through, which means November (even though I only committed to May- we got an extension-yay?). He has now told me that I could take on a full-time project and finish these other two during nights and weekends if I am so desperate to do something new. 😩It is like every hour and everyday that I put into these projects is a lost opportunity cost to my career in this new PY. I just want a normal Deloitte experience, especially after two years in this part of the company (which yes, has been my passion and mostly enjoyable). Holding out hope that I'll get it, but this part has been discouraging. I was just really hoping to be free by now.

I've heard multiple people say at a certain age, it no longer makes sense to make partner. What does that even mean? I know you typically have to be a partner for 10 years to fully vest in the pension. But even if I were a partner for just 2 years, isn't it still better to be a partner? Year 1 partner comp might be almost same as your comp the year you made partner due to health insurance and buy in, but it's not like you're worse off as a partner. And you get your buy in back when you leave.
