How is this a bowl 😂
I am not in a densely populated area at all and Target was completely out of all formula when I was there yesterday. Bare shelves. It’s not a position I would want to be in and is why I’m pumping even though my baby doesn’t take a bottle — I’m donating the milk to local moms who are affected to help alleviate the stress of finding food for their babies.

You’re wonderful 🙂
I have never been so stressed in my life. My child has allergies, I can’t produce milk without getting sick AND he got sick from my milk, and the shelves are empty. I have family and friends and coworkers that live around the country looking for my sons formula (and all of the store brands as well) and nobody can find it. We have tried many different types and my son is getting sick every time we switch him bc the last brand type is out.
My son is almost 6 months and we added purées to his daily routing to remove essentially 1/5 of his formula daily intake to extend the formula we have.
What I’ve been reading seems that we have to bear down for the next 2-3 months or so and then things should lighten up a bit. Formula is getting flown in from international markets, the FDA is receiving additional $ to hire more folks to conduct reviews at companies like Abbott to open their closed plants, and the folks that have been stockpiling should hopefully not keep buying given the news. Also sounds like many mothers breastfeeding smaller infants that normally would have switched to formula are continuing breastfeeding given the shortage, so maybe a smaller population of folks needing formula going forward than normal.
FDA just approved kendamil from the UK to be sold here starting next month. But…. I’m not sure it would work for OP
It absolutely won't be an issue for you if you aren't pregnant yet. I believe the plant that was shut down is due to be reopened shortly so by Fall it should be back to normal.
Definitely feel for moms right now. I listened to a podcast about exactly what happened to lead to this and it's pretty terrible. Not only did some babies die from the contaminated product before the shutdown/recall, there was a whistle-blower who came forward with a letter to the FDA about the poor conditions in the plant and the FDA took over a month to even speak to that person before an inspection shut the plant down. There was also a routine inspection at the plant a few months earlier by the FDA where they found no issues - which makes you wonder what the hell they even did in that first inspection.
Abbott was found to not be at fault. They voluntarily recalled their formula out of an abundance of caution and found no problems with their baby formula. The FDA just dragged their feet in getting inspections done after they were the ones that shut them down. This is horrible political red tape that got us into this mess.
The people that seem to be really suffering in my community are people who need a specific brand due to allergies or medical issues. There might be some type of baby formula at their local store, just not the specific one they need for their baby. So they have to go to every store searching. The lower their income the harder/more expensive it is to drive around searching. It’s that or pay the gray market criminal prices. Babies have been hospitalized in some areas due to parents diluting the formula trying to make it last.
For all those with special needs, look into German formula!
I’m seeing formula at stores near me as well so that’s partly why I’m asking too because I’m not sure if it’s only certain highly populated parts of the US or what. Someone said to try Canada and since I’m a few hours from the border I don’t see it being a problem. The whole situation is unsettling. We’ve getting a million different cereals and wines and cars but we can’t stop that to produce extra formula for babies???
I’m in Houston and the shelves are bare here.
We are okay here since I EBF and have an oversupply. I have been working double time to pump a little extra after bedtime every night because we only have 2 spare bottles in the freezer. I donated 100oz from the freezer to another mom who needed it because my daughter ended up severe peanut allergy after a few exposures and we couldn’t risk milk from before that was identified (no way to know when I did/didn’t eat peanuts).
Try your very best to breastfeed and get your milk in. The larger majority of women can BF or EP just fine, so you will likely have options. Pump a little extra from day one to freeze and save for emergencies. It adds ip quick and every oz helps. I wouldn’t let a formula shortage change my plans to have kids… just means I would try harder to make either breastfeeding or pumping work and if it doesn’t work, by then all of this should have much improved. Even if there is still a shortage, many of the big membership stores like Costco are good about still getting some in regularly or alternative versions.
This would stress the heck out of a new mom. I would say, talk to your pediatrician for samples and tap on local resources but please don’t kill yourself trying to BF and pump if there are issues or if you don’t want to BF and/or Pump

2 friends of mine are going through it now, one a former work colleague and another I know through my kid’s activities. They’re very anxious and stressed over the whole thing, and I hate there’s not much I can do to help (other than keep an eye out in the stores when I’m out).
I am - my kid can only take amino acid formula bc he has FPIES
I had my son in January and had every intention to breast feed. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen complications during childbirth, I ended up not being able to. I wouldn’t let the possibility of not being able to breastfeed influence your decision on whether to have children. But I would keep a close watch on the shortage situation, just in case. Btw running store to store trying to find formula to feed my son has not been fun. However - we did find formula. It just wasn’t his usual brand and is more expensive.
I’m due this fall, I planned on breastfeeding for the first few months if possible (I was able for my older kids) but didn’t want to for as long with this one. Now I feel like I don’t have a choice and stress will certainly not help my supply.
I know a lot of parents struggling to find formula right now and a tremendous amount of misinformation out there such as “order from Canada” and my personal favorite “just start breastfeeding “ 🤦♀️
Order from Canada is one of the only ones that didn’t sound so stupid. They don’t set I be going through it the same I guess. I’ve seen some people say “back in the day people would make formulas from canned milk and syrup” and I’m like …… I’m back in the day babies died because of it too. No one knows what to do. Some women are selling their own breast milk and I feel like that’s a whole lawsuit waiting to happen also
Honestly, most moms I know. I’m nursing, but my hearts breaks seeing moms so stressed about feeding their babies. Bless you all.
Thank goodness for European formula 🙌🏻
My LO is 8 months old. I’m still breastfeeding/pumping but have been burning through my freezer stash since she was sick a couple week ago. I’m trying to build my supply back up. If I can’t within 10 days, we’re going to be in a rough spot. She also has FPIES to at least one food so it’s possible she’d have it to formula. So I’m not directly affected yet, but scared.
I’m so sorry to hear that. Good luck to you and your baby girl. Hopefully you can stalk the shelves and stock up if need be. Good luck!!
Yes, I have a 9 month old and was struggling to find formula. I was able to get my hands on a few last week after stalking Target shelves
I’m in the suburbs of Chicago and my Costco recently is out of stock of formula and it’s out of stock online. We found a few options at Target. It’s wild that this is even happening.
It’s very stressful. I have a 5 month old. His only food is formula. I just got a shipment from Germany though so I’m good for a while now. Thankfully my child is not allergic to anything that I know of. However, I do keep having to switch types which isn’t great on his stomach and a few of the ones I’ve tried (ironically when I tried the hypoallergenic one), he flat out refuses and makes a disgusted face.
I supplement breastfeeding with formula because our baby was tiny and this helps him grow. There was seemingly formula on Instacart/BuyBuyBaby/Shipt so we thought we were fine. When you actually click to buy the formula you get a message it's not available. I found one lone small can of more expensive/different brand formula at a random Walgreens and pounced. No idea how we'll procure the next can.
Does Similac Advance work for you? I’ve seen those in stock in quite a few stores…
Yes, it’s real. Go to your local target or drug store and walk by the formula section. This will give you an idea of what us moms are having to face. Luckily my daughter just turned 1 and I have transitioned her completely to solids because of this. She cries for her milk to take her naps and go to sleep but I’ve transitioned her to Almond milk. Being a mom is already hard work and this formula shortage has been extremely stressful.
I have a 7 month old and I don't produce any breast milk whatsoever so the formula is crucial for her feeding. It has been very stressful not being able to find her formula anywhere. I'm running out of ideas because we are almost out. I thought the media are reporting that new shipments came in from Europe but I don't see it in the stores unless people have purchased them all. It's a scary time for sure. Wishing and hoping for the best!
She uses Enfamil neuro pro powder formula! Thanks a bunch
I’m in Delaware and I’m seeing formula on Instacart. I’m only 3 months pregnant so I don’t need it yet but I wonder if the shortage is everywhere. I also have family abroad so I plan to have them mail formula to me if it’s a problem
