I can't imagine us staying out for the rest of the year. If that were to happen, I can't imagine how we would deal with that. You'd be looking at a lot of students who had missed roughly a quarter of a school year. How do you catch those students up? Do we test them? I think we will go back. Not sure how long we'll really be out, but in all honesty, I think there's more at stake here than this year/semester's classes. I want to do what we need to to keep the death numbers as low as possible. The higher end of those estimates (that I've seen) is over 1 million in the US and that's not even considering the rest of the world. If staying out of school a month makes that number smaller, I'll do the online lessons as long as I need to.
I don't think ny is going back till the fall. Washington State just made that decision
I think that no matter what staying healthy and preventing the spread of this disease is what is most important. The children will catch up next school year if it comes to not going back this year. It is a shame that certain social aspects of school would be curtailed but protecting student health is most important at this moment. In fifty years I’d rather being sharing with my grandchildren how my senior prom was cancelled than not being around at all! Healthy is the most precious commodity we have!
While I want us all to be safe and happy, I will be devastated if this ends up being the case. Our kiddos & families are just not set up for distance learning.
I know Ohio Gov has said it could be the case but there’s some serious pitfalls that need addressed too.
I completely agree. I hope it doesn’t come to that. There’s definitely more than one pitfall to remote learning.
Even if we're out for the rest of the year, students aren't missing out on instruction. Classrooms are using Google classrooms and other forms of online learning. This really will be a test of how well parents will push their children.
Maybe spending this time with them will make parents realize teaching is paramount to their child's life, school is paramount and we are underpaid and underappreciated. Maybe this time out will force parents to actually parent their kids, because they have to. Maybe this time will force parents to actually look at what their children are learning about and help them. Maybe this is what our country needs right now to encourage change in homes and schools!
I totally agree! This time away might be just what we needed to get more parental involvement! Teachers might be more appreciated and education might be more valued!!
Please don’t say that. Believe it or not some of us like the kids and need the money.
We are not officially doing distance learning yet for our school since it’s considered an extended spring break but I imagine if we go into April we will have change it it & try to set up families without ever meeting them. I’m going to convince my school to hold “training” in small groups if needed for parents. A lot of our parents are ESL as well as our students and will need the support
I miss my kids...I know it’s keeping us safe but I’d really like to go back..
I do. Our poor seniors - no prom, no graduation... It’s just crazy!
@New York-thank you!! Truly appreciate it. 🙂 I hope your son is still able to have his! And huge congrats on all of his hard work!!
I will go crazy if that’s the case. I already don’t love the summer boredom - I can’t imagine being home the rest of the school year and summer. Even if I’m working remotely, I’m going to go stir crazy.
Same. I go stir crazy
I wish it weren't true, but I would say it is likely we don't go back this year.
I teach in a Title 1 school, more than fifty percent of our students don't have internet access. I'm not even sure what we would do. Maybe we could meet in smaller groups and teach in a more condensed format for some of those students, or maybe somehow computers and WiFi access be be made available to everyone free of charge.

🙋🏼♀️ after Ohio is definitely publicly looking at that option, I’d say all of us are headed there. But that’s just me.
Depends on your state. The state of Texas who'l go back and they will force testing too. Most of the Republicans have their pockets lined from the testing companies.
State testing has already been suspended in TX.
Well the CDC was recommending 8-20 weeks 😳
🙋🏼♀️
I think we are done.
I do too. We are having to learn how to share and teach online.
Michigan is closed for the year. 😢 Still doing remote learning, only allowed to “review & enrich” so no actual curriculum. I can’t believe how sad I am! Was really hoping she would follow the Ohio governor, as she has been, & say May 1.
Small logistical point: the over 1,200 students in my building still have stuff in their lockers! Students were told to take home what they needed, but not told to take everything! That will be a nightmare.
It is sad for me too. The eighth graders will miss out on all of their transition celebrations but I know the their health and safety is most important! It’s boring for me, I will survive, just hoping everyone else stays safe and healthy!
What would happen??
Yep I work in Nevada and because New York closed we are now out until April not sure how long. The state has said this will be our Spring break!!!!
I’m not sure but I think it will be at least a month.
Yes it's from now until the end of April.
We are off until April 5th, but I am wondering if it will be more towards the end of April:(
Since the governor of California issued a state of emergency teachers will be paid their full salary and benefits will be covered
Thank you! We weren't given full communication about this at our school so we've been worried
