How many questions would you expect a new senior to be asking? And what types of questions are acceptable without seeming too incompetent. .

There’s no real number. If you’ve never done something before and you want to learn, ask the question. If it’s something you can do a little research on, do it and then come to me and say “I think this is the answer but just want to confirm”. Personally, I’d rather you ask the question if you’re not sure than do something wrong.

Just ask away yo....the issue is when u ask the same questions over and over again or dont try to figure out the answer before asking

2nd year senior here. Ask as many questions as possible!!! Here is what my partner told me, “ this is a year when you are leading a team and they will understand all the questions. Next year they will expect you to know this so use the reasoning of - this is my first year as a senior so can you just explain to me ....- bc next year expectations are higher and you can’t use the first year reasoning anymore "

I set upfront time, 15 minutes 2 days a week to run things by my manager, mostly because I don't want to do the same thing twice.... Basically that time is to cover my ass so shit doesn't come back to bite me with a day or two left in the audit.

like

Basically if it's something a new Senior would be doing for the first time, ask away.

If you ask me something I have an expectation you should already know, I don't care and I'll shrug it off the first time. If you ask a second time figure out a way to make it sound like you thought about it.

Generally I don't really care about questions but I do look for themes (like what experience you had on previous teams)

Two thoughts here:
1. An incompetent and ineffective senior is the one who is NOT asking questions. This is a profession of learning, not a profession of false ego.

2. As a manger, I would rather someone ask a question before tying to “figure it out” — even after a few times. There is no bigger budget-killer than a room full of auditors who are screwing up, “researching”, or otherwise not being productive. Ask away!

3 (bonus thought!) If your manager or your senior ever tell you to “go and figure it out” then you’re at the wrong firm. You have a culture of bad leadership and should make your exit.

Is it normal to be threatened to be fired after making mistakes that you had no idea were mistakes in the first place?
I’m a junior litigation associate at a small firm, and the managing partner says things like “you aren’t providing value to the firm” or “you’re being paid to avoid mistakes like these” when I make mistakes due to, what I believe, to be a lack of guidance and instruction. As in, they could be easily avoided with a “please keep in mind X” or something like that. Thoughts?

Has anyone dealt with a company where it’s mostly white males in leadership and you brought into make changes but leadership doesn’t let you into the so called “boys club”? And how do you handle that? They constantly undermine your ability to do your job and make decisions and complain to higher leadership that your just a kid not able to actually help them? Especially when all your doing is helping them but they break laws and make terrible decisions with HR related activities?

My hands are shaking!! I just got off a call with my toxic manager who is clearly not happy I am being poached for another division. I tried to hold firm as he attempted to 20 question me, who was it, who wants me, what division, how did they find out about me? And of course the gaslighting of “why didn’t you come to me I could have helped or made introductions”. Clearly everything is about him. How have you handled such situations? What could I have done better with my abusive manager?

My boss the general manager is setting me up at work. She is saying all this stuff about me that is not true at all. But when I come into her shift or come into my shift after hers nothing is done for me. A lot of the prep is not done. And she complains about me not doing the prep. Stuff Is still dirty. One day she left the grill on. Etc. There was another manager there training to run another store and she said I basically do a lot of the work while she doesn't do much. So she stood up for me.

Sales assistant at a drug/grocery store. The manager thinks my coworker does great work but I've seen her putting out new products without rotating stock (so the oldest food will be sold first) and we are always supposed to check the dates when shelving new things. The problem is, I don't really get along with this coworker and I think it's noticeable to management. If I bring this up with our supervisor, are people going to think that I'm just trying to sabotage my coworker so that I will look better than her?

Just got let go and my manager said part of it was because I was looking for other jobs. I didn't look for other jobs at work, so I'm not sure how they could have known that unless a coworker snitched on me. Is it worth it to try and find out who or should I just leave it? Can't deny that I'm seriously pissed off about it.

I am curious on others views. My boss (owner of the business) brought in his wife as the role above me but literally she has no experience in any shape of the position EVER. With that being said everything (both positions) responsibilities have falling on me, I decided to let the owner know I am struggling in my position due to having everything fall on me & rather then him taking his personal emotions out he justified why it's ok and him cursing at me for asking for help. Is this acceptable 🤔
