I at least read every subject line, but the mark all as unread option is a beautiful thing. Especially when you have rules set up so that specific emails go to a specific folder.

How many of these are spam/newsletters though? Honestly having folders or rules is the only thing keeping me from an inbox like this sometimes

like

Zero. If you’re asking how many “follow up” flags I have, however......

T H IS

For years, I was a zero inbox guy. Now, unread stands at 5,921.

Howwwwwwwww!? Lol howwww? Let me tackle those for you because I’m triggered now!

like

19085. I wonder how many are from associates who are still waiting for a response. 🤔

likefunny

100% certain that many are. I get so many that there’s literally no way to keep up. I tried for years. Finally gave up. People who want to communicate with me know to call me.

Apparently the answer is 0 or 10,000. There is nothing in between.

I mean I like zero too, but I’m at 48 🤷‍♂️

Last I checked it was over 45,000

0 we are in a customer service business. Not answering emails is tantamount to telling your clients you do not care about them and their cases. That’s a great way to avoid getting repeat business

Who said anything about them being client e-mails?

Omg some of these would scare me. At the start of the day I had 300 emails in my inbox and was stressed - read but action needed taken. I’m down to 20 and headed to bed. All messages have been read. At my firm, some of you all would be in major trouble!

like

At the moment, 17. I try for 0 at the end of the day, but have varying success.

0 - unread emails trigger anxiety. If I want a break from checking my inbox, I put my phone on airplane mode and cut off from anyone and everyone. I did that for two days after giving birth. On day 3, the phone was on, and I was checking work emails and responding to covering colleagues (and did so throughout maternity leave).🤦🏽‍♀️

I think there’s a disconnect between the people saying 0 and the people saying thousands- I personally currently have 163. It I’ve been a 0 person and a 1000 person in the past, and the difference between those isn’t leaving important emails unread, it’s opening and deleting junk mail.
My “unread” are all firmwide emails that I can tell from the subject line don’t apply to me. But I may need to refer to them later, so I don’t want to delete them. And I’m too lazy to go through and move them all to an archive or folder, so here we are. I sincerely hope no one is leaving substantive matter-related emails unread for more than an hour or two ever!

like

I leave substantive emails unread for more than an hour all the time. I’m in court, in meetings, out of the office doing things, on the phone, etc. Don’t send email for anything truly important that requires a response or that is time sensitive. Pick up the phone or go see someone. Email is not the equivalent of either and not everyone lives in their inbox.

like

I once heard a story of a law firm partner who, when his unread # got too high would just delete everything, then email the usual suspects saying something to the effect of: “having some technical difficulties and lost all of my emails, if you are waiting for a response from me, please re-send.”

I imagine you can only use that a few times before you become the one they tell that story about.

assigning attorney told me back in February that the partners decided *not* to staff me on a very time-intensive, annual deal this spring (which I worked on in 2021), so I could focus on new work that has come in which I am REALLY interested in. Therefore, I signed on to those new projects. Now, seems like he is trying to walk back on it and staff me on Deal A. I’m unbelievably stressed and idk even what to say to him. Now I’m committed to other stuff/partners and Deal A is SO much work.

Was laid off in April by midsize and have had few interviews the following months. Working with various recruiters yet still little to no traction. Didn't go to top tier law school and graduated with low gpa yet have 3 years exp. Recently have been working with boutique for contracted out work who gave offer which is significantly lower than prior role (about 40k). Role would have no billables and any business brought in would be practically equally split percentage-- is this role a good idea?

Does becoming partner at a firm increase your attractiveness to other potential employers? I’ve been at my firm for 8/9 years and I am looking to jump ship ASAP due to what people are telling me is an underpaid salary. But the managing partner says if I stick it out another 6 months and hit big hours all of those months, he’ll “submit me for partner.” I don’t intend to stick around here long term, it would just be for the title. He would not tell me how much more I’d make as a partner.

Weird question: so, I come from defense side, but am currently working as a plaintiffs litigator. I have applied to a defense firm and I’m currently in the mix of finalists. Coincidentally, I happen to be opposing counsel in a case staffed by one of the firm’s partners. He and I have a good professional rapport and mutual respect. I don’t think he’s on the hiring committee, so I doubt that he’s aware of my candidacy at his firm. But I think he would be an excellent reference. Can I say anything?

Looking for advice on breaking into the employment litigation field. I’m a 3rd-year general litigation associate at a v10 law firm in NYC where I’ve gotten to work on a couple of L&E cases. My job search for L&E roles has been slow because most of the roles require significant L&E experience.
