I find the lane assist and adaptive cruise control features in my Honda Civic to be futuristic enough.
Semi-educates guess here: may come to large cities in the next decade or so depending on how quickly infrastructure can get made/software further refined.
I don’t think it’ll get to exurban/suburban/rural areas for a long time, at least not unless the vehicles still have the capacity for manual driving.
Could be? I think the bigger issues for non-urban areas will be if the vehicles are equipped for it, the presence (or lack thereof) of other infrastructure needed to manage a network of self-driving cars, etc.
Doesn’t mean they won’t get sold, I just think they’ll have to have a backup “regular” driving mode for folks to use around there. This is also putting aside the possibility of pushback from people who don’t want to give up control of their vehicle.
I don’t think it will for a while. Decade plus depending on advances in computer vision and related fields.
There are too many roads that give trained human drivers trouble
Probably not as soon as it should, as insurance companies and local governments will be opposed due the drop in revenue, due to safer driving, fewer accidents and virtually no speeding tickets or DUI's.
I never thought of it like that. I guess humanity has been monetizing bad behavior for a long time.

I’ve had auto-brake almost crash me like 5 times and saved me from an actual crash once. Idk, I’m super glad I have it but I don’t know that I trust it entirely.
cars are only getting more expensive unfortunately
