How much admin/non billable time is good on a weekly timesheet? I try to limit it to 30 minutes a day...

I only enter admin if I’m below 8 total hours so I “need” it. But if I’m in overtime I wouldn’t bother. So it’s only ever in slow times when it doesn’t really matter if there’s been 3 hours of admin as we’re all doing nothing anyway

like

What ever you actually did. I enter what I worked, even if it is admin that pushed me over 8 hours. For slow times my admin time is usually close to 3 hours (employee reviews, articles, trainings, cow, business development, scheduling, etc)

like

Accurate timekeeping is probably the best move here. I have a friend who records all their admin as they like to know how many hours they truly worked. I like being blissfully ignorant.

Depends on what’s on your schedule. If I have to do an hour or two of meetings/admin a day, I’ll always put it on there.

I typically have between 20 and 30 hours a week.

I am a 10 yr lawyer. 7 yrs in my practice area. Little over a year at current firm. Still an associate. Im at large plaintiff firm w/ billable requirements. I do mass/class cases and hold a couple leadership positions (these were competitive to get). What should salary be and when should I make partner. I’ll add I work remote and pretty autonomously. Little contact with partners or anyone at my firm.

Am I crazy for trying to switch firms? I am a second year and I love my firm and the people I work for are terrific. My previous practice group was terrible but the work and the people I’m with are great and so is the money (big law). The problem is that I’m not getting enough of it. I range between 110-130 billable hours per month and feel like I don’t deserve my salary. The partners I work with seem to love my work and insist that it’s fine but I have started feeling useless (continued)

I love my firm, but just got an offer to move firms for a bigger chunk of change and lower billable hours requirement. Logically, it makes sense to move, but I’m hesitant. Both firms seem great culture-wise. I am young and succeeding at my current firm. Any thoughts?

Obligatory financial info post. 1) size of firm, 2) billable requirements, 3) salary, 4) bonus, 5) quality of life, 6) debt, and and 7) family/married/single. Go!

16 weeks and so worried all of the stress I’m under is going to hurt the baby. Between work, my own scary (non-pregnancy) health stuff, the pandemic, my mom (who is a widow and lives alone, basically isolated by choice due to covid) is having health issues, and pressures to keep billable hours up, I’ve been having complete breakdowns. Today I spent almost the entire day crying and now have to make up the billable time this weekend. I really worry abt what effect this will have on the babe.

Thought experiment for you, fishies.

We all love to hate on billable hours. What’s a real, feasible alternative???

Small agency owner 🙋🏻‍♂️ I’ve wracked my brain and have 3 biz model options, none great:

Billable hrs: Generally accepted. We all know the downsides.

Pay4performance: Big upside potential, tons of risks.

Project pricing: Cloak for billable hours. You have to estimate project cost with something.

Who’s thought of a better approach??? Genuinely curious if there is one.
