How much am I handicapping myself leaving my firm before being promoted and working a year as a senior? I’m going from staff to staff in industry getting like a 17% raise with performance based bonus up to 10%. I’m sure that raise is much lower than it would’ve been had I gotten another year of exp but I’m leaving mostly bc I’m so miserable in public. Will this decision really impact my career/salary growth all that much in the years to come?

There isn’t one recipe for success. I’ve seen people leave at your level and do incredibly well, I’ve seen people stay and do incredibly well, and I’ve seen people who never even entered public accounting and do incredibly well. Life is filled with opportunities and options, and we get what we take out of it. If I’m not mistaken, you’re still relatively. There is no telling what lies ahead, which is the beauty of youth in my opinion. Make decisions that you believe will result in the best life that YOU want to live, and if you realize at some point you made the wrong decision there are always options to fix it.

I did exactly this, although my raise and my bonus percentage are slightly higher which helped push me toward the decision. What are the benefits like as well? My new benefits are also adding more money to my pocket and will continue to do so. To answer your question, I have absolutely no regrets. I have a life now, plenty of potential to grow in my new role, and my family and friends have told me it’s like I came to life again. There’s no price on that for me.

I was going to leave as an A2 after 20 months of experience. In retrospect I’m very glad I stayed. When you hit 3-4 years of public experience, your marketability is on a whole other level. But it all depends on you.

Is it best to leave after S1 or S2?

If you’re dead set on getting out of public ASAP then take the offer. You can always boomerang back and try to transfer to a different service line.

A HR question I really want to understand. ISRS HR quoted a podcast "The not so great resignation" saying 70% regret leaving and many want to go back to old employer. If this really the case the employee likely left due to higher pay at the new company. If they want to boomerang back they will likely come back at even a higher rate than they left the new company for. So getting double raise when they boomeranged. Isn't it unbeneficial, why not just give employee a 7% raise in the first place?

Currently a first year staff in Risk Advisory in a Mid-Tier Firm hoping to move to Big 4 for either Risk or Cyber. When would be the most appropriate time to make the change? I heard that Senior Staff in mid-tier would most likely be hired as an “Experienced Hire” in Big 4. So would it be smarter to make the move now as a first year staff since I’ll be considered Experienced Hire anyway?

I am coming up on a promotion. In preparation, I've done some market-level research for the future position and found the average salary is approximately $30k more than my current salary. I've been with the company for 10 years in various positions, but 2.5 in my current. My previous supervisor would never entertain any negotiations above the offer letter; stating "the offer is final". I've spoken with other colleagues and its not true.

Any advice for negotiations, and how much is too much?

I really love my team and have 4 YOE with this firm. I was presented with an offer from a competitor at a 46% increase in salary. Is there any merit in bringing this offer back to my current employer and asking them to match? Or will I just get laughed out of the room?

Primarily work on the engineering side, but I went to school for analytics. I never saw myself doing the engineering role, but when I first took it, it was a great start to my career.

I was offered a new position mainly in management in a completely different industry for $100k and bonuses.

I have several years that I haven’t had a job interview because when I needed to change jobs it was for people who knew my work personally and the offer was on the table. However, now I applied for a new job via LinkedIn and tomorrow I have an online interview and currently even though I know I’m perfect for the job and I know my abilities, I’m afraid I’ll fail.
Any advice on how to have a successful interview?

I am currently doing a masters degree at Concordia so I believe 25$/hr would be more appropriate. Am I aiming too high?

Really feel like I fucked up my career choice right now. Everyone said you could go anywhere from Big4 and it seems like that’s just not the case. Have my CPA license, went to a pretty good school, and it seems like the only jobs out there are more audit roles and internal accounting roles which seem pretty cut and dry. I need to get out of this job but I want it to be the right thing as well.
