I'm so grateful for this thread. I feel like this is the only place I can express my complaints about my salary without backlash.
I have my MA, this is my 3rd year teaching, and have maxed out on the payscale. My salary is $67,000 and next year it will be $70,000, which includes the 1% raise the district gave us for adding extra work days... Not that bad, but so much of it is taken out of my monthly paycheck for dues and adding health insurance for my husband. Considering I live in Southern California and my husband is still going to school, I barely manage to get by. Instead of thinking about buying a car or saving up for a place of my own, I'm preoccupied paying off student loans, bills, and rent (discounted rent with family, because I wouldn't be able to afford living on my own).
It just upsets me because the admins and district personnel get paid 6 figures+ and are reaping the benefits that teachers have worked so hard for with the students. We're being promised reduced class sizes, more resources, more support/ opportunities for growth, but I still have an overcrowded Kinder class, I'm still buying things for my class out of my own pocket, and I don't feel like I'm supported. I love going above and beyond for my students, but at the same time I sometimes feel as though why should I put in the extra effort if I don't feel supported or acknowledged. And I know I'm not the only one feeling this way.
Okay... Well I went on a little tangent, but thanks for reading my little rant 😊 If anyone would understand, it's teachers. I appreciate you guys ❤️
And about 15 miles away from Waukegan, I've got a master's plus 30 with 13 years experience and will be at 98k this year. Master's +0 with 13 years experience is in the mid 80's.
I’m confused. Did you not know the salary range of the profession when you chose to join it? It’s a free country ... primarily capitalist ... as least for the moment. If you can’t make enough teaching to support your life choices ... with respect ... I’d suggest changing those choices or professions.
As a relevant aside I walked away from a six figure salary for a $35K a year teaching over twenty years ago ... with my wife’s absolute support. I worked my butt off and have well more than the MA+54 at the top of the pay scale. I coach two teams. I make about as much teaching as you can at my school but not as much as I did 20 years ago. I’ve never regretted my decision My wife and I raised two wonderful kids on my teachers salary, were expecting our first grandchild in October and we’re still crazy in love. I can’t think of how money would’ve made any of that better.
16 years with M.Ed with computer science endorsement, NBCT 2010 with renewal 2020. Now, don’t pass out! My salary with SC’s $7500 NBCT stipend each year is still under $60k a year.
$51k and I’m almost done with my masters. 5th year teaching but 2nd year with my current district. With the costs of my current classes plus student loan debt, I am thinking I should be paid at least 65-70k a year.
Oklahoma salary schedule
This is ridiculous and disrespectful!!! How one supposed to live on these salaries today ??
34K. 5 years. Arizona. Yep...
AZ really messed up their teaching staff when they changed the credentialing requirements - why pay for expertise when you can lower the bar and pay for glorified subs? So ridiculous!
Special ed teacher here. $40,500 year 3 with a masters- I should be paid 60k
No partner, just 1 F/T and 2 P/T teaching jobs, trying to make it to retirement .
In six years of teaching your jump in salary has only been two thousand dollars? Ugh that is disappointing. Praying for you to hopefully be compensated better in the near future
I’m a paraprofessional in a private school and this is my second year. I have a BA in history. I make 12.25 an hour now. last year I made 10 and I asked for a raise for all the work I put in when I am not clocked in. I still only make about 25,000 a year doing summer camp and working 2 jobs outside of school.
Have you decided which online school you will attend? In my district people are attending WGU and Grand Canyon University. If you do WGU you will have to submit an edTPA to be eligible for your teaching certificate. I am working on that now.
The sad thing is I am recently separating from my husband,I can’t afford the mortgage or a decent duplex in the area we live. My neighbor is a nurse, at age 24 she is making $80,000. Any other career I feel like I could have taken over the payments
Are you responsible for paying for health benefits or a percentage of them based on a sliding scale? In my district, we are responsible for paying 33% of health benefits, which comes out to about $15K per year. My salary, on paper, reflects $90K with 20 years and Master’s, but between taxes, benefits, dues, pension, and social security (which, btw, I’m convinced we’re going to lose), I’m making more like $55K net. I take home less now than I did 10 years ago.
Our district pays for a single policy. Anything more, i.e., family, you pay anything over the single policy amount. Our policies are good with low deductibles and relatively low copays.
26 years with masters...$82,500.
I make $86k in my 5th year. I have my Master’s degree. I work in an extremely well-paying district and I consider myself extremely lucky.
Considering the cost of living in CA, it’s likely comparable to other states with lower pay. It sounds like a lot, but $86k in CA doesn’t usually go too far.
I make 42,000. I have a Masters degree and I’ve been teaching for five years. I don’t know what I deserve but I know it’s not having to work an extra job to make ends meet
12 years, two masters, 91000. But I’m in NYC and I can barely afford rent and student loans. That being said, I think that we all deserve more money especially because more education is expected and it’s not free
Philadelphia suburbs pay six figures plus for doctorate and approximately 15 years service.
Really 😱😱😱😱?!? Woooow!
This will be my 48th year and I have a Ph.D. Raised 6 kids and obviously at the end of my career. Make 89k but have taken 3 year pay freezes along the way. Spend a ton on classroom library and on association dues, but it’s all part of the profession. It’s the students who keep me coming back, not the pay.
Where do you teach I'm MI?
97k with 16 years experience along with a Masters and 60 units as well as a BCLAD. Of course housing is expensive and sucks up most of my monthly paycheck. It’s All relative living in San Diego. Looking forward to moving out of state as soon as I retire.
24 years. $53k with extra stipend for an added class and a club I sponsor.
It’s why everyone is looking elsewhere. It’s gotten that bad.
2nd year 42,000 bachelor's
I started at 17,500
5th year, bachelor's plus graduate credits (working on my masters, changed lanes), and extra compensation for teaching two college courses, I make 41,000 a year. With all the work I do I think I deserve 50,000 (I teach 8 preps and am honor society advisor for no compensation and knowledge bowl coach) I do get 1,700 extra spread out through 3 months for the knowledge bowl. I'm in MN btw.
Yes, you deserve more.
Masters plus 24, 40 years 63k
21 years 47K😢
I am beginning my 27th year and I am at $49,600. I feel that I should be making closer to 70K since I produce good testing scores in the classroom consistently. Any raise I get is eaten up by insurance increases.
