Here is the order you want to follow: 1. 401K up to max match contribution. 2. HSA max contribution. 3. 401K up to max $19.5K. 4. 401K max over-contribution if allowed, rolled into a Roth IRA. 5. Traditional IRA max contribution rolled into a Roth IRA. If you have money leftover after all of that, for God's sake, spend it on something you want.

I agree with this. The only thing I would add is if you're eligible for a HSA, max that bad boy out too. Once you hit a certain age (sometime in your 60's) its treated as another traditional IRA and you can spend it on non-medical expenses Also @SM1, I think thats the HSA max for a family. Im single and I believe my max is $3650 this year

$19.5k

0%. Climate change gonna wipe us out , no point in saving for retirement

Max it out if you can. That’s free money from the employer match you’re leaving on the table and the compounding interest gives you the most benefit the earlier in your career you can squirrel it away.

I’d stick with 6%, but the rest in a ira or Roth, 401k is nice but you can find no fee funds outside of it

Last few years always the Max. Biggest regret has been not doing this sooner.

Max it. no less.

max it out. Also if you can hit another 10% into various IRAs t.formal financial advisor.

0% Trying to maximize my liquidity, also my employer doesnt match it I do max out my roth IRA though as that money is much easy to move around.

Max it out. Whatever your tax rate is, that's the return you get on the investment.

At $140k you should be able to max your 401k even in a hcol city.

Whatever it takes to get the $19.5k/year. I also max out my HSA and Roth too. 33F, no debt (including a paid off house and 2 paid off cars). My secret? I live in a LCOL area.

I’d like to ask for 135k plus 10k sign-on since I’m forfeiting 5k bonus and another 8-9k in unvested 401k. Is that reasonable? I’d be ok with 130k and 5k sign-on
