15-25 percent — if the work and experience was good, just like waitstaff. White-collar professional services are, unfortunately, usually gratuity-free. But you do drive a hard bargain
Freelance designers are working for a company who is being paid by a client and are paid accordingly. Tattoo artists are working for an individual.
Exactly, tattoo artists aren’t, so tip.
I actually have this same issue with hair stylists that set their own prices. Just set the total price you want me to pay and if I like you, your reward will be getting a long-term client who gets her hair dyed every 5 weeks. I hate doing the tip thing.
Incidentally, I tip my tattoo artist about 25%.
Are you saying for the artwork or the actual inking it on your body. Bc if it’s the latter, your question is a waste of time. If you hire someone to do the art and someone else to ink, not sure you need to tip, you commissioned them for artwork and paid the cost. If it’s the tattoo artist inking you, yes you tip. You tip your hair stylist, your delivery person, you waitstaff, you barista, your driver, your hotel cleaning people, you just do it. Don’t be cheap and don’t be a jerk
Calm down, I asked about how much to tip, I didn’t ask *why* we need to tip....
By asking why freelancer designers don’t get tips, you opened that door
@ACD @leo let’s take a freelance illustrator as a more comparable example then. Why shouldn’t they be tipped for their artwork? I’m talking about freelance illustrators/designers in general, not just in advertising, so looking at it from this broader perspective, I don’t see a big difference
I have been tipped before for freelance design work. Not freelance for an agency just me working for a client. But to be fair the project turned out amazing and I delivered a week early
I feel like the answer you’re looking for might lie in the truth that unlike the most of the aforementioned services, design is higher-priced and less volume-based. Plus, you’re the sole proprietor. You have the ability to build in rush costs, or set margins for yourself. Just my .02.
