How much cash do you keep on hand (cold hard cash)? I have $7k sitting in a safe and have been thinking of splitting it between an HYSA to fluff my emergency fund and finish off my TIRA contribution for the year. If I leave it as cash I will still hit my TIRA max out by eoy.

Anywhere between $20-200. Literally have had the same $20-40 in my wallet for atleast 2 years. Who uses cash anymore?

like

I had to use it last night to pay a library fine 😂. The $1 really broke the bank.

funny

Usually less than $100.

About $20 in quarters and bills in my car for emergencies.

$10-$30 in my phone wallet for times where you need cash (credit card machine down, fee charged for small purchases)

$20-$50 around the house in case of emergencies (delivery tip, forget to go the the atm and have no cash in my wallet)

likehelpful

Probably $500 depending on how much spouse has added subtracted from the wad (they buy/sell on Facebook marketplace, usually in cash).

Usually carry $40 in my wallet but I go months without using it.

We barely use it and don’t keep a stash. I have whatever’s in my wallet which ranges from like $40-300?

$1000 hidden, grandparents style. Started it after 9/11 and added more this year since the pandemic.

Same. I’m a NYer who lived in Manhattan in 9/11 and the black out in 2013.
Power outages during the blackout particularly was where you wanted cash. The bodegas and grocery stores would sell to you by flashlight, but only could manage cash sales.
And then just worrying about terrorism taking down power grid, internet, or financial systems. A little grab and go money seems wise to me.

like

$1,000 that gets deleted by babysitters, craigslist purchases, and lunch money, then we replenish.

That’s what my available margin is for...

I keep ~ 1,000 cash in my house and 50 in my car. For emergency purpose only.

I keep a grand in the house just in case

$20 in my card case and ~$100 at home

I have $6000 in a safe. Was considering investing most but with the way this market is going, nuh uh.

I have roughly $200 but reconsidering after seeing some of these comments

My boyfriend and I make 200K combined and live in NJ. We have $1000 in monthly car payments combined. That’s all we owe. Our credit scores are in the 800s. We have 50K to put down on a home. We have done the math and I know we can afford much more but he doesn’t want to buy more than a 400K home. I’m almost positive we can afford 500K and be more than ok. But then he starts to talk about how much kids cost and how we will be house poor and we won’t be able to afford kids. 🤔 Am I insane??

Just found out not long ago that I’m pregnant! Exciting but scary given that I started a new position about six months ago. How long did everyone wait to tell their supervising attorneys? I’m at 10 weeks now and am struggling with severe nausea in the office, so I feel like I’m going to be found out if I don’t mention something soon. Also, not sure about whether the firm has maternity leave (not in the handbook). Is there an easy way to bring it up after I announce? Thanks for the advice!
