Be grateful for that privilege of showing your leadership skills. In smaller engagements I still have to test basic controls sometimes as a second and third year senior.
I would say I went from 80% documentation and 20% miscellaneous (coaching, meetings, reporting, etc) to the complete opposite when I made senior. On some jobs I’ll document the riskier or technical areas, while on other jobs I might not actually prepare a single work paper. Each situation is different
Started out feeling the same way as you, OP, and then I honestly just realized the best way to balance work on technical stuff that was more or less new to me with managing staff would be by working longer hours than the staff (when they’re not working is my focused time). I give them incentives to work faster, so if they’re working on cash, it’s ok if they go home 2 hours early
That’s normal. The best senior manager I ever had always told me to take easy sections (We usually have at least 1 other senior on our “larger” engagements) like Cash while in-charging because I wouldn’t have time for the technical sections. He said I’d still be involved in the technical sections through coaching and reviewing. I didn’t do it for the same fear you have but I wish I had listened.
