How much do people pay for a nanny starting at 6 months? We are going to pay $15 an hour for 7-8 hours a day for at least 3 days a week. Is this low or to much? I get frustrated reading reviews about how much people pay there nanny’s (which is less) bc I am now using the money I put away for savings for child care.

Which area do you live in? I live in Dallas. $15/hr feels like the average range for most large cities. I had a live-in nanny (she stayed with us M-F, we picked her up / dropped her off) and paid her ~$12/hr. Another colleague had hers M-F, 8 hrs a day and paid $18/hr. If you are comfortable with the nanny’s quals, and ability to take care of your child a few $s/ hr won’t feel bad in the long run. As a mum to a young one your sanity and comfort is far more important. Good luck OP!

Where do you live? Even $15 seems low. We pay ours $25. I would say that is on the higher end. $20 is typical where we live.

I’m in seattle and for one child it’s $20-$28 based on experience. If you’re asking for meal prep and laundry and other things you might be paying even more. There’s a big push, and rightfully so, for nannies to earn a living wage.

like

Chicago and $18 seems to be the average maybe even low end for one kid. Maybe down to $15 but with lots of extras like paying for ubers, extra PTO, able to bring their own child along. Our nanny was paying for her own health insurance (want her to stay healthy and up on immunizations, etc.), she also had her own car (you wanted her to have something safe and well-maintained). Just think about how far your rate would go in supporting someone’s personal situation.

Especially for part time, it seems low because the nanny either needs a second job the other days or doesn’t need to wholly support herself with the job, such as a student, but in that case reliability is an issue as if their class schedule changes, their availability changes.

We paid $16 for a 6 mo old 3 years ago in a midsize city, full time (50 hours). Rates are a bit higher now, probably $18-20.

Want to add that I know what you mean about being frustrated by other people paying less, OP. I know there are people who pay less than $15, maybe less than min wage under the table, often to really young women with no experience or to undocumented women, who don’t have many other options. I am not willing to do this and encourage others to pay nannies a fair wage, but try not to dwell much on what others do. Nannies are expensive, but rightfully so for the “luxury” of 1:1 care and schedule/tasks tailored to your needs.

Really appreciate everyone’s responses! For context we live in Baltimore and she has a second job (two 16 hour shifts and one 8 hour shift at Kennedy Krieger in the child support center. She also happens to live in our building so she is not traveling) but I appreciate everyone’s responses!! This helped put things more into perspective

Hey awesome mamas! What are your plans for when you have to go back to work but your kids are staying home either doing distance-learning or the hybrid model? My three are all in middle school and high school doing the hybrid and are home by themselves Monday -Wednesday. Even though they’re old enough to be home by themselves I still don’t quite trust that they’re on task- especially my 6th grader. Also worried about having to help them with a lot of homework after I get home from work. Ideas?
