Oh goodness gracious. Y'all are frightening me. Read Tax-Free Retirement by Patrick Kelly. Don't just accept what they spoon feed you regarding your savings.
$359k after 22 years
I've banked 46k in 401k & 4K in the Roth 401k in 2.5 years with the firm, Ira 5000k per year and then play money in my brokerage and healthy % into general savings
Only put up until the match amount. Anymore than that isn't smart bc of taxes later on. Find another investment option
Well I do Roth for most of mine
7%
Roth that shit if you're an analyst
Consulting match programs suck. Came from industry and banked $30k in 3 years. 6% match 1:1 plus 4% in extra company contributions. Idk what normal amount is for consulting firms. I invest most of my savings in other places now. Like offshore corporations in the Bahamas.
77k in 401, 18k in Roth (no longer eligible to contribute), 33k in an ESPP from previous employer, and about 25k in cash that needs to find itself into an investment vehicle. Been working since 2009and saving a lot but never maxed out 401k. Also almost done paying off 85k in student loans on top of all of that or else I'd be in a much better position.
$15k and I started in September
Fuck, I've been doing the max. Is that wrong
No. I've been doing the max too.
Not sure why EY1 recommends against maxing out. You definitely should. There's a debate about whether you go for regular or Roth 401k, but I don't see an argument against maxing out so long as you can afford to.
Max that thing out.
So you'd advocate a variable universal life policy? I don't see how picking a VUL over a Roth 401k makes any sense. Roth money is post tax just like VUL money. But VUL's have tons of imbedded fees.
FYI EY match is far less than industry and less than other big four (I would assume) bc we are the only big 4 that still has a pension. If you started before 2014, you will vest after 3 years. 5 years if you started on or after 1/1/14
Just do the math.
We have pension too and I'd be surprised if your match was less than ours
30k, 5 years.
25k in 5 years
