Are we talking total investable / invested / semi-liquid net worth or strictly 401k? 401k only, I have 11k at 27, I put in 6% in and Uncle Price kicks in 5.5% last I checked. I didn't save at all in my 401k until it started vesting a bit. My personally managed account has performed better, so I try to put as much into that as I can afford to.

@D5 - what do you mean by maxed x2 on a 401k? On another note, in general, assuming you'll be around long enough at a firm to fully vest, it makes sense to put in the max matched by the firm, but why not set aside money in a Roth or regular IRA and manage it yourself at lower fees?

Not to be a dick but you guys make WAY to much money not to save. You are throwing away free money by not maxing the match at least.

The better question is. How much are you contributing, percentage wise, of your salary...

50k, 29, 12%. Another 35k in IRA but I feel like I'm a terrible spendthrift only being able to save this amount (almost as bad as I feel for only hitting C at 29). My checking account's as bare as the Weasleys' so I'd trade some long-term gain for some short-term liquidity...

D5 how the fuck could you have 2.7m at 34? Are you putting after tax dollars as well after maxing out? Plus what level are you?

like

D5 is obviously just trolling you guys. It'd be mathematically impossible for s/he to have invested $2.7M in a 401(k) by 34. 🙄

My ability to do basic math is the reason why I know you can't have $2,700,000 in "ur" 401(k), thanks. Bye, Felicia. 👋🏽🎤⬇️

So I’m only contributing to 401k enough to get employer match, and I’m saving an additional ~20% and putting 90% of that into my vanguard mutual funds. Reasoning is that I don’t want to lock away all that money maxing out 401k. Have 3 months expenses liquid in a savings account. Is this really dumb? Essentially trading tax for the option of actually using my money.

(I haven’t gotten a paycheck so if you know how to check your tax bracket be for you get one let me know)
