How much do you tip on average on a bill? And before or after tax?

^you know that’s 20% right? Just wondering...

When do you tip? ALWAYS. Why? Because it is part of the social contract of going out to eat in America. Whether or not it is morally right, tipping is ethically right in this society because that is what we have collectively decided and codified! It’s right there in our laws! If you can’t afford to tip, you can’t afford to go out to eat in a restaurant that works with a tip system. Get take out, go to McDonald’s, or eat at home.

And if you have a problem with that social contract, such that you want to see a change in the system, not tipping is not the answer. Supporting legislation that creates living wages would be a better start. Supporting the creation of a restaurant labor union would be a better start. Donating money (in addition to tipping your server) to those causes would be a better start. Unless you are actively campaigning for a different system of restaurant wages, you are not solving any problems by choosing to leave nothing for your server at dinner. You are benefitting from a social contract that you disagree with while doing almost nothing to change it.

20% after tax

C2- you are here now, please don’t be a jerk. Giving you the side eye too KPMG2. (This is assuming you both are in the US, if not, apologies!) There is no reason we can’t help pay living wages on our salary or expense account. You may not like the system, but it is the one we have. Signed, a former server who worked through college to pay bills

Zero bc I live in a country that pays hospitality workers fairly 💁‍♀️

18-20% before tax

Move the decimal to the left one time and double that number (i.e., 10.00; 1.000; = 2.00 tip)

like

20% after tax. Who TF tips less with the salaries we have? Or when you’re expensing? Unless you’re sending a message that they did a shit job, and even then people get busy and also have bad days. Spread the love.

15. 20 if really good. ALWAYS before tax.

15 to 20% before tax.

C2 - don’t be that guy. Think of your server as someone you contracted for a specific service. If they deliver well, you should tip at the customary 20%. (Coming from someone who waited tables to get through college)

@D1: You also get inferior service. I grew up in a country that also paid hospitality workers fairly. Now living in the US, you quickly realize how much better restaurant and bar service is when people have to work for their tips. They also usually end up making a ton more money than the “well paid hospitality workers”.

I tip 20% after tax on nearly all restaurant bills, and I round up to the nearest dollar.

For coffee and take out, I may throw a dollar or two on there if I’m feeling generous, but I don’t feel obligated to do so.

For delivery, I try to tip at least $5, more if it was a large order. Then I’ll probably do 20%.

20% on total bill (tax inclusive)

like

Usually 12-15% , unless it’s fine dining. It’s not my job to pay workers. (Come from a non-tip culture)

like

I do 20% after tax so guess that is 22.2% pre-tax and round up. Tip 30% at any semi regular places.

@M2 just imagine the food is more expensive

And to answer the question: Typically tip 20% after tax as the baseline, higher for exceptional service

My brother in law tested positive for Covid on Friday. He started showing symptoms on Tuesday (Body ache, headache, fever, runny nose). He started feeling better today so he went to work. I'm furious. I told my sister that he should be self isolating for at least 10 days before returning to work, but she said his boss said he has to go back to work. His boss said not to tell anyone that he texted positive and that he needs to return to work. He works at a liquor store where he is in constant..

Need advice. Been with my SO for over 5 years, live together and not married. We went to a sporting event with a couple and they both mentioned how my SO just left me to go socialize with others and everything during the entire tailgate. They mentioned how it’s not ok. I agree but it hurts having someone else point it out. What would others do if their SO constantly does this? My friends want to talk to my SO about it but I feel like that’ll come across in a bad way.
