How much does a letter of recommendation from your current employer help when lateraling? I currently work at a top-tier regional firm in a small market (1M metro)and I’m moving to a large market. There aren’t any biglaw firms in my current market, but associates at my regional firm regularly lateral to biglaw in big markets. I’ve applied to biglaw firms in the larger market but not much luck. I’m well liked at my firm. Will a letter of rec from my employer be a significant boost to my app?

I don’t think a letter would do much but if a partner at your current firm knows people in the market/where you are applying, an email introduction would go a long way to separating you from the other random applicants.

This is a good suggestion!

It would probably imply that you’re being let go and your current employer wants to help you find a good landing

No. That’d be odd / unexpected.

Would be weird to include a letter of recommendation but candidates to our firm have included references (otherwise optional). We’ve actually at times called those references to get more information on the candidate and it’s definitely helped some candidates get an offer.

Why are the expectations on billable hours so extreme on lawyers? Consulting, accounting and other comparable jobs, apart from investment bankers, are way below lawyers.

And it’s not that lawyers won’t make enough money if they work less - reduce hours by 10% and you’d still be making fortunes as a partner and a small fortune as an associate.

I'm a new first year associate, almost two weeks in. Have to ask: is it normal to have almost no idea what's going on? I know my teams view me as completely clueless (which is 100% accurate), but whenever I ask for an explanation/they go over something with me, I'm still left feeling like they're speaking a different language. Is it just me? Every time I do a task I get so nervous I'm screwing up big time because it's like I'm stumbling around in the dark. What can I do to improve?

Currently in big law employment lit department, but interested in potentially doing government-side work in the future. Is it common for attorneys to go from big law to the EEOC, state departments (like CA DFEH), or DOJ Civil division (employment)? Or is there usually a step in between (e.g. clerkship, plaintiff’s side work, etc.)? Thank you!

Let’s call out the scam now: return to the office policies are asking for more of your time for the exact same pay. Record billables over the year and a half have shown that associates are indefinitely more efficient working at home. If you want me to come to the office, lower your billable expectation or pay me more. Simple economics. We have leverage, let’s exert it here.
