45M - $1.2M in 401k, ~$1M in brokerage, $400k primary residence close to being paid off (this was our first and only home), 2 rental properties worth ~250k each (will sell these to fund college tuition for 2 kids). Plan is to retire at 55. We are immigrants (India) that came here in the late 90s to pursue a masters degree and lived a relatively frugal life. Lately, we've been splurging a lot more since we feel comfortable financially... business class to India, luxury hotels during vacations, bought 2 nice cars over the last 5 years (S Class and Audi Q7). I also lucked out in the stock market - been investing steadily since 2005 - portfolio is heavily weighted with AMZN :) We are thankful everyday for what the opportunities this country has given us..
Your post seems to focus on retirement accounts. I think you should look into financial advisory services or financial texts to give yourself a broader understanding overall of retirement planning, investment, etc.
Retirement accounts are for the tax benefit but are not as liquid and they are limited by the amount you can put into them based on life status.
I would not feel comfortable expecting to only retire off of a 401k and/or an IRA. Especially as I mainly ensure to put aside what company's are willing to match there.
There are too many other financial aspects to take into account of assets and value to use this single measurement (and poor at that) of retirement preparedness. For example, someone capable of pulling in some amount of side income in retirement (either minimal effort or truly passive) is going to be much more flexible than someone trying to pull purely from a single retirement account.

Warning: Another d*ck measuring post.

I only look at dick posts, never divulge mine

Two beautiful kids and a happy wife
How did you go for real estate investment? What are the options out there?

That’s a great start, shoot for saving 20-30% of gross and you’ll be sitting pretty. Max Roth contributions every year!

I always knew you'd jump to Accenture

Are you single ??
45
1M in retirement across 401K and IRA
2 M in real estate equity including primary home
1.2M in other investments including cash
When this total gets to 10M - I will retire .
I started quite late in retirement savings . What saved me was real estate
What’s late ?
37, $1.1M between retirement and savings and some material assets. No debt, not married, no kids, and not yet a home owner. Money doesn’t buy happiness but it can bring a little peace of mind. I should probably start living life soon, haha.
I knew I was going to regret posting my information. We all have our own journey and money is the absolute worst way to try to gauge one’s “success”. As someone else mentioned, “comparison is the thief of joy.” No one knows your individual story and struggles, and we all have our own timelines for when things happen, and some things never happen for people, and that’s ok too.
Just remember we’re all one phone call away from our lives changing. So whether you’re tooting your own horn or hearing the “womp womp” trumpet, never judge your insides based on someone else’s outsides. The best thing for you might not be be the best thing for me.
36, $155k (I'm behind)
No D5. 401k.
23, 4k in 401k, 10k in savings
54yo
$1.2M (401K, Rollover, Roth and SEP)
$1.0M (brokerage account)
$1.9M home ($350K to pay off)
No other debt 💸
I’m out in the next couple years!
Goal is probably $3.5M, keep the house and rent out to generate income and buy a cheaper tiny home in a LCOL with cash 💰
27, 6k Roth IRA, 11k 401k, 6k emergency fund, 1k brokerage. Had student debt to pay off and prioritized that initially
Thank you SC7! That is good to hear. Looking at the responses, it seemed like I was way off. Definitely gotta keep working toward it though :)
I think the rule of thumb is your retirement assets should be 1x your salary by age 30. That being said, doesn’t take into account many different paths and walks of life.
You do you, OP.
All good! Easiest way is to max your 401K and let it ride on a broad-based US stock market index.
A financial advisor can tell you if you’re behind.
I’d like to know. Thanks!
58 933k in 401k
I was only planning to work 2 or 3 more years. Besides 401k have 800k in savings and pension that should be about 750k when I take lump sum at 65. I am not certain when I will need to start to withdraw from 401k. Need to speak to financial advisor.

It would be more, but I’ve taken $36k trips and own a house lol

Yeah you can get decent lodges for $500-1k (that include the game drives bc those can be a few hundred each). When I go again, there are some canvas tent lodges that I want to book and are less.
26 years old - 120k retirement, 40k savings
This is music to my ears C4, had the same mindset shift here. A lot of the stresses of life fall away

Probably could have saved more aggressively but have enjoyed a lot of nice things along the way (e.g., backpacking for 1-4 months here and there).
That’s awesome. Where did you backpack - need some recs! Did you use PTO, LOA, or do it between jobs?
nice, i love this game.
