7th year in Litigation. For small clients I often speak directly to (or email) the client. This could include minor strategic issues For big clients, pretty much everything with the in house counsel goes through the relationship partner. I will deal directly with folks from the client who are being deposed or assisting with document collection or fact investigation, though.

This is pretty standard for capital markets in my experience.

5th year in litigation. For small cases that I run on my own, I very often speak to the client without a partner on the line. Even on bigger cases, some of our clients have figured out that I’m easier to get ahold of and call me directly with questions. Lately the partners are all swamped, so I’m talking to a whole lot of people without much supervision. It’s been a jarring transition from next to no client contact to free range client contact, but needs must I suppose.

I’m a 2nd year in emerging companies and clients will email only me without the partner all the time because they know I’m cheaper. If I know the answer I just handle it myself.

Heading into benefits open enrollment and beginning to receive current provider renewal percentage increases (medical and dental) as well as market offers from other providers. Curious what other employers have experienced and hoping to receive successful negotiating techniques. My company is too small to receive claims experience data from the provider. What % increase did you see for a small to mid size company?

Can anyone smarter than me help me figure out why I was charged NY income tax as a Texas resident? I was hired in August and paid out a hefty signing bonus that was taxed at the New York income tax level because the firm incorrectly mapped my home location there. None of my work was performed there and I don’t live there. Now the firm is refusing to payback the paid NY taxes?

It’s so hard seeing so many people make so much more money by switching to new firms. I’m making a strategic move that will probably command more comp in 3-5 years than I would have made if I hadn’t made the jump but my salary bump (25%) isn’t nearly what everyone else is getting right now because I’m basically starting over in a new area. I have serious FOMO. I *think* I did the right thing but now I’m all caught up in comparing myself! Could use some words of encouragement or advice, y’all…

I’m an incoming AC1 at Bain and I have spent the summer studying a bit for the GMAT since we had a stipend. I took it with no practice and received a 640. After studying on an off for a couple of months I received a 690. I’m likely going to cancel the score since I realize it isn’t enough for M7. To provide some more insight on my profile. I graduated undergrad from UofM BBA Magna Cum Laude, have interned in Big 4 consulting, IB, and VC, and I’m an Asian-American. What should I do?
