How much is your rent? I make about 120k per year and live with my parents since covid started. Hoping to move out but NYC is super expensive. Need a baseline, no financial support from parents (low income) so have been saving in hopes of buying.

At $120k I was paying about $2400 in Manhattan. Before that I was paying $1700 (my share) with a roommate in EV. You can absolutely find a variety of price ranges depending on size, location/neighborhood/borough, and type of building (walk up vs high rise) One thing to keep in mind is you most likely won’t have a car, so no payments, gas, insurance. You can invest some of that (minus subway/cab average costs) into your apartment costs.

Very true. Chicago and NYC seem to be the main places that have this benefit. There are still plenty of times annually where I've had to rent a car to travel to another state so this can be a slight offset. Still, I've saved money overall - probably $3.2K a year at the extreme minimum between the amount I would have had to pay for parking, gas, insurance, maintenance and a used car if it were like $10K (offset by $1,000 of car rental costs).

HHI $180k and my mortgage is $660 😬. 2 bed / 1 bath, 1100 square feet. Old but in great shape - wood floors are original and they’re simply stunning. Live in the “city” part of a rural area in the lower Midwest. 1 hour from small airport, 1.75-2 hours from big airports.

I make 260k and have been living with my parents. Not super embarrassing during Covid, though. If you do the math, that’s hundreds of thousands in savings by retirement.

Not embarrassing at any times! The leg up on your retirement is fantastic.

I live in DC, make $88k and HHI of $170k Live in a 2bed/2bath for $3200 ($3400 with parking) and pay $1650ish in rent but my half is $1800 with parking since it's my car

Make 118k and pay nearly 1700 all in in the Midwest.

$200k HHI paying $1,750 mortgage plus around $400 in utilities. Living in the midwest.

1500$ for a room in a 2BR apartment in Toronto. My income is 100k

$160K+, Chicago $1,300 for 1 bd / 1 br

This is the price with 2 months free of rent (covid discount). The price without this would be around $1,500. You can find places on various places at this price. This one is in Lakeview. Note that this isn't a high rise type building which would include all those extra amenities that would put of the cost. The previous place I was living was $1280 a month with no free rent discount. It also didn't have a dishwashing unit within.

$3000 2B, 2B, Bay Area. 217k+137k.

I am so tired of Deloitte allowing bias towards MDs. Only because you are not an equity partner, your voice is automatically muted, you can contribute but you don’t get to decide. The minute a senior manager gets promoted to a principal, he gets on top of an MD with 15+ years experience and treats you like he is your boss. I mean this is a cast system at its best! I can’t wait to leave this firm, COVID can’t end fast enough.

A H1B colleague’s father in India was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and is on chemo. He is concerned about when he should go visit because to return from India on an H1B he has to get his passport stamped and he hears there are long waiting lists to do that because government offices are still sporadically open due to COVID. And he is further concerned that if he gets stuck in India for a prolonged time, he would violate Firm policies about how long he can work outside his home office. Thoughts?
