How much medical detail to share with manager? Currently at the ER with some kind of blood clot issue. Still waiting to hear treatment plan but thinking I might take a sick day tomorrow. Have some meetings I’m supposed to present at and lots to do but not feeling great. How much should I share with my manager if I do take a sick day? Should I share that I spent the night at the ER and have a blood clot or be more vague? Don’t wanna be too vague bc I had a mtng w manager today and I was fine

Share as much as you are comfortable with, but make it clear it's serious.

I would definitely tell them you're at the ER, and while it's not related to the virus you'll definitely be out tomorrow and will update them when you know more.

You're not obligated to tell anyone your specific health concern but if you are close to your leader I'd consider telling them since I would hope they are concerned about you as a person.

like

I think you should share exactly what you just shared here! Or if you're not comfortable, just say you're at the ER and won't be able to work tomorrow.

like

I would leave out the blood clots and maybe mention you’re at the hospital

Appreciate the advice and kindness from all, I’m going to be ok! I felt like I was embodying American capitalism as I sat in a hospital bed with my work laptop making a deck look pretty. In retrospect kind of a silly time to be concerned about work, realized how easy it can be to lose perspective when in the trenches of a busy week. But still I’m back home today, just sucking it up and working since it’s Friday. Cest la vie

like

We are glad you are ok! Hope you can get some rest.

I would just say that you had to be in the ER for an acute issue, will be out tomorrow and will advise ASAP if you’re going to need any more time. That’s sufficient to let your manager know the seriousness without revealing what exactly is wrong. Your health comes first and the manager / client will adjust. If you get any negative response then escalate that to the engagement executive or HR.

I would say you’re at the ER now and will not be at work tomorrow. Any reasonable human will understand an emergency is a serious thing and details are up to you. I overshare so I would say why 🙃

like

Share the details so your manager knows how dire the situation is. Hoping for a quick recovery for you.

like

Say you have a blood clot - it will help your manager understand the seriousness of your illness! Hope you recover quickly and feel better soon.

Just say you're in the ER, snd if you're comfortable them share more. But if you just say "sick" you'll get questions... ER makes clear that they should back off and leave you alone til you signal you're ready to return.

I once had someone on my team with this issue. I’m glad he told me because it was caused by stress, so I was able to adjust his workstream so he could be healthier. I think it depends on your relationship with your manager.

like

also email whenever you can. Keep in mind ERs are slow once you’re being treated and can take forever to discharge you even for minor concerns so you’ll be exhausted tomorrow regardless

My friend - take care of yourself. Your job is important, but your health is leaps and bounds above it in terms of priority.

I had a very similar situation in early January. Texted my manager a pic from inside an ambulance and let him know what was going on (we have a very good relationship) and that I wasn’t sure how long I would be out but it would be at least two days (happened on a Thursday morning). He was super great about telling clients I had a serious medical emergency and everyone understood, he didn’t tell them what had happened but that it was serious.

Once I came back, I shared with my direct client counterparts after a few weeks what had happened and they were very gracious.

My wife also contacted another coworker (the only one she had contact info) to have him tell HR. My leadership has been awesome and I hope you have a similar experience as you recover.

I’d be honest and share as much as you’re comfortable with.

Tell your manager you are currently in the hospital and not sure when you’ll be back to normal. Might be a few days.

If your manager’s answer is nothing short of “rest up, take as much time as you need, and hope you get well soon”, you need a new job after you’re recovered

OP are you okay?

Any advice for asking to work from home?
I started my job just over a month ago and the one day a week I work from home I absolutely love. I have an hour commute to the office all other days and I'd love to even just get one more day at home. My manager is not aware of my adhd and I have crippling fear and shame around it so I'd rather not tell him. The office environment I'm in is honestly any neuroduvergent's nightmare. I know it's probably wrong to not tell him but I don't want any judgement.

I finally took 2 days of PTO that wasn't a sick day or a mental health break from being overwhelmed. I completely disconnected and honestly it made such a huge difference in my personal life. Stuff got done around the house, I wasn't as anxious or stress about every little thing. It really put into perspective of what's actually important to me.

Highly recommend taking a real break.

It felt like a used car sales pitch, I was sold a dream but given junk. I am constantly replaying moments. I have read so many books and everything leads to they were the problem. Hello! I’m currently a Administrative assistant now working at a major medical system in Baltimore. I’ve previously worked for 10 years as a medical assistant in a variety of specialties and primary care. Lately, I’ve been feeling a bit stuck as to my next step. Part of me want to go into management, another part is saying go get your RN, and the other is saying go into Social Work. I’m all over the place. Any ideas? And how would I be able to cross over to management?

Does anyone else hate medical coding? I got my CPC and loved learned all about it! But once I started actually working in it, I hate it. They talk about how it’s all about translating procedures to numbers. But it’s not! It’s all about Money. All about how much RVUs the codes have so the provider gets the most reimbursement. With how everything is now a days, I feel like a bad person after a day of work. Just me? Was it just a bad employer that I worked for? I feel lost.
