How much money do you estimate you’ve saved from not having to commute? (dollars not sanity)! Is the cost of commuting in the NY area one of the barriers to your returning to the office?

$5 to ride subway, $10 for coffee, $15 for lunch, $5 for random snacks and misc purchases per day x approx 500 days since we were last in the office = $17,500 dollars I’ve not wasted. yeah, not going back.

There is the money, yes. But for me the most valuable thing I’ve gained is that commute time. 2 to 3 hours a day back in my pocket. (An hour commute each way, door to door from NJ often meant NJ transit delays, so the time adds up.) Now I use that time to exercise and it has been so great. I would HATE giving that up. Also, for many commuters the $ cost includes a parking pass for your local train station, a monthly train ticket PLUS subway fare etc.

Same, but 4+ hours a day.

I’d say the cost of commuting is not very high on the list of barriers for returning. Sure it’s nice not having to spend that money/time but the idea of being tied to an office 5 days a week for a full day even if I am not busy has finally been proven to be dumb.

like

The biggest barrier to me is delivering the work people expect now in agile timetables and adding a long commute into each day. Plus the cost is now an expensive side because everything else has gotten more expensive

Great point @havas1!

Aside from the monthly cost of ~$400 in fares (100% in office) and ~$300 for lunch, that is roughly $700 in savings (round up to $9-$10k a year). The hours saved commuting is 2.5-3 hours a day, compound that with certain stressful workdays and shitty weather. I think what I have learned is that the scarce time saved is becoming more valuable, there is no incentive to really work in the office if you and your team can get the job done and well remotely. If I am paid a lot more then I will consider going back but even more on top for full time in office.

100 monthly

I started keeping track when I realized this was gonna go on for a while. We go back to the office on Tuesday with a hybrid model. Based on my running doc: Close to $4k for the train ride. $308/month for 15 months. At the beginning I was so good at making coffee at home, and maybe treating myself to Starbucks 1-2x/week, but still saved right around $1k. But I’ve gotta be honest, my sanity and work life balance has been literally and figuratively priceless. Pandemic hit as I was in between apartments and deciding what I wanted to do. I lived at my parents’ house and stayed there throughout covid. The train alone is gonna drive me nuts. But now I’m kinda forced to move closer to the city again and spend out the ass on rent

Cost of monthly MetroCard + cost of daily lunches + cost of daily contact lenses.

Forget the metrocard savings… my significant other and I were spending $25 a day on doggie daycare… and one of us would have to hurry home by 7 to pick up the pup. Now I do all my work with my dog right next to me 🙌

$600 monthly in commuter costs. 4 hours a day. It’s been pretty amazing.

like

$380 a month for train ticket. What was the subway cost again? I took it half the time. I still pay for parking to not lose my spot.

like

Also was spending $20-30 a day to feed myself in the city.

like

$6,660 total saved just on commute!! It’s definitely a CON of returning to office but I’m accepting that reality.

like

I’d say $7000. 300+ for a monthly for lirr and maybe 50-100/week for subway and Uber/cabs

like

Not for me. I was a brown bagger and I stuck to the coffee/tea/water available in our kitchen

$127 a month, but probably more like $25-50 a month since now I just buy single rides.

Any advice on how to get into the sales side of Investment Banking? I have above average experience, have a finance background degree but keep failing the initial application stages (before the interview stages) and then watch people on LinkedIn with less experience get roles with top banks. I understand that I need to figure out how to get past the application tracking systems but it can be really frustrating at times and advice online is often very generic (I.e. tell them about yourself).
