$2M. My wife is going to keep working (indefinitely) since work is her hobby and she genuinely loves it but is fine with me working half time and using the money I make for a bunch more grad degrees I want to do or just retiring fully if I want to. I don’t really have expensive hobbies so at most I’d leave and go somewhere cheap abroad for the winter.

Are you me? Lol. My wife (engineer) wants to work for years to come, but I’m ready for new adventures. Maybe starting and running my own small business or just huntin and fishin everyday.

Quite surprised most answers max out at 4M, I have family money that I will inherit around 3.5M home equity and have already set up my first rental at 24 that translates to 500K in 12 years, according to you guys I should already retire then? 😂 My number is an ambitious 20M, you gotta grow that inheritance after all

$2M at least. So that I can keep withdrawing 3 percent, which would roughly correspond to $5,000 per month. I can live on $5K. I can even live on $4K, not less than that. The more the better, no doubt about it. I’m way behind.

like

Figure for me in my situation- it was $6-7M between my wife and I. Thinking similar to most on 4% takeout, and with inflation this'll be worth maybe 66% this sum when I do retire.

So if I work and save enough money on my own to retire comfortably, blessed. If my neighbor works the same amount and saves money but it it’s not enough for their needs, then they’re... not blessed? Cursed?

10M cuz i want lambos

$4m which I am now $75K short of. I will wait for EOY bonus and RSUs vesting and retire at age 60.

Recently retired with $4m+ and no debt. Love leaving the workforce at 60.

Targeting $4m. A couple years away excluding $1m+ in home equity. Would like to get to $5m but I don't think my mental health can take it.

A3. High income and discipline. No real secrets. High income only allows you to accelerate the timeline. Discipline is the “how”

In today’s money? $2-3M In 2050 money (my target for retirement)? Hard to say, as this is largely a function of inflation, but probably $5-10M

like

In today's money approx 10M .that's after you have paid off your house and kids educattion. Based on your age , you can do the math.

like

Yup. Two factors here. Longevity and potential health issues. It will be amazing lifestyle. We have achieved two of the three listed. Working towards the 3rd one.

I am keeping an open mind about an overseas retirement. You can live like royalty in Thailand on $2,500/mo. So “how much” is dependent on “where”. But my wife and I have no children so that might make the decision a little easier.

like

Maybe 800k. but I’ll live in an inherited beach condo in the Philippines. I’m fine with that .

like

In America? About 2-3 million. In Albania? About 500k. I make shit money and have accepted the fact that I won’t be able to afford retiring in America

No unfortunately, just my favorite course in College by far was an archeology course that focused on the history of that 1 sq. mile since humans showed up.

Surprised at the number of $10m responses.

Targeting about $5M as a single person

Targeting $5M excluding home equity.

like

$4M - assuming a 3% drawdown (more conservative than than the traditional 4%) in a LCOL state/country would give me $120K/year which is more than enough for me especially since some of it is gonna be tax free

smart

I am targeting 3M usd

like

Want $4-5M to live on 4% + pension + soc security. Of course minimum withdrawal requirements may force me to take out more but will just reinvest or give away.

3-4m

Of course depends on how much you want to spend in retirement, travel, etc. To live a pretty comfortable retirement it seems $3MM is a good target.

In this new year, I would like to get better at investing. I am embarrassed to say that all I have done is max out my 401K every year. Hi! I have a few questions on the backdoor Roth in which I’ve done a bit of research online. When it comes tax time, will my 401k vendor (Merrill) give me the correct documents? I’m just nervous in the entire process as this is my first year doing this. TIA!!

I've been putting my 401k into a target date fund, but the risk/upside just isn't high enough given I'm not retiring for another 30 years. Thoughts on putting it all in a large-cap growth fund (VIGIX)? Returns have been solid over last 10 years. Investing through work, so don't have all funds available to me.

Maybe off-topic, but I’ve got a question related to taxes and withholding. 2020 was the first year that both me and my wife made full salaries in our high-paying jobs (she’s a pharmacist, I’m in consulting). We don’t do anything out of the ordinary to reduce our taxes, we just put ~ 6% each towards our 401k’s. No house or kids so our other deductions are limited. Just started doing taxes and got a shock that we owe big. Any others in this situation? Do you just withhold a ton extra on W4?

I’ve long disliked the term ethics. Definitions of ethics all refer to morals. Morals are very personal and vary a lot from person to person, culture to culture. Law is how we as a society express our preferences and impose rules and restrictions on ourselves. So the question should never be about whether companies can be ethical. What does that mean? One person thinks eating meat is unethical, another thinks it’s perfectly ethical. Companies should focus on complying with the law.

In a world of remote consulting work…. How long can the US maintain its high premium over European and, esp. developing market consulting? Both price tag to clients and significantly higher salaries for the people. I imagine may move faster at Big 4, etc. than MBB, but within MBB the huge cost and salary differentials feel… increasingly hard to maintain (even though I think the differential has actually gotten bigger, not smaller in the last two years). Thoughts?
