How much money were you making when you bought your first luxury watch? How much is too much to spend on a watch relative to annual earnings?

1) enough
2) depends

The only correct answer!

Everyone is different and has different priorities. Someone could make a lot less than you but their top priority is to get a nice watch. Others could have more than enough income to buy expensive watches but choose not to lavish on themselves. So it just depends. Whatever you do, just don’t go into debt over a watch.

I bought a $2k watch when I was making a bit over $100k after my first year of consulting. I was also seriously underspending on rent and didn't have any student debt

There's no rule, but keep in mind that a luxury watch is something that ultimately very few people will notice and you buy for your own enjoyment, so you can spend as much or as little as it's worth in terms of marginal utility vs other non-essential ways to spend the money. For example, if you want to spend $5k ask yourself if you'd prefer a luxury watch vs many small vacations, one or two great vacations, a nicer apartment, tons of concert tickets, not having to worry about bar tabs, etc

I bought a 2k watch at 220k. I have two small kids so it was and still feels like a giant splurge. The GS i’m eyeballing is 6500, not sure i’ll ever be comfortable enough to just buy it. But I stare at it all the time…

I won’t say it doesn’t matter, but I will say you shouldn’t benchmark on others.

I don’t remember how much I was making back then, but I bought my first as a 4th year associate in big law years ago. (2008 if memory serves me right.) but I received my first as a graduation gift from high school in the mid 1990s.

$50k/yr, bought a datejust for my dad's 60th birthday. Split the cost 50/50 with my brother

The bowl get this question a lot. Salary alone isn’t a good gauge, and how much to spend depends on many other factors. I would say just keep in mind a watch is not an investment, it’s splurging, so just be smart and don’t over extend yourself.

I was making $105k and I spent $4500 on a Grand Seiko SBGM221. I loved watches for most of my life and owned many swatches and g shocks during college. Worked for about 4 years saving as much as I could for a house when I felt like I had enough extra funds to also buy a watch haha

Also for your last question. If you could save $70k for a watch and still have your other regular savings and fulfilling all your essential needs go for it. I bought that watch about 4 months before I bought my house. Buying the watch didn’t put me at risk or add any extra stress about me not being able to purchase my house. That’s how I see it.

I was making $120k when I bought a $5k smp300, and then $175k when I bought a $8k Rolex sub. I probably spend more on watches than I should but I enjoy them and plan on selling some away to make room to experience more watches.

For another type of view (not wrong or right just different) I’m 31, make 400k n still don’t see the use in an expensive watch. But I enjoy them so I stick w sub 1k and micros. Would rather use that 10k towards another investment property

I had my egg retrieval this past Saturday and this week I have had the worst lower back pain of my life. Every morning I’ve been waking up extremely tight and have to use a heating pad to loosen up. During the injections my back was hurting a bit, but it’s gotten worse. Have others had this happen? If so, when did it go away?

So, I've realised there's a problem with developers, a lot of them are coders, not engineers. And another issue, is that, companies don't really care about their progression as far as I'm aware, so what did you guys do in your own time to transition from being a coder to an engineer?

Anyone else getting a little Rolex fatigue? Every year seems to be small incremental changes to watches that I’ll never be able to get due to their distribution model. Don’t get me wrong, I’d still very much love to get a classic model at some point, but it’s just been getting tiring knowing every year it’s small changes to the same watches and I won’t be able to get them anyways. And when they do push the envelope (OPs 2 years ago), they get discontinued 2 years later and pump prices up…
