How much notice do you give when switching in house jobs? I'm close to getting an offer but no offer for a new gig yet. My current boss has said to reach out to him if I'm thinking of leaving bc we are a small team of 4-- so they can prepare a departure. At most I would be able to give 4 weeks notice. I feel very guilty. How unprofessional would it be to only give 4 weeks notice?

You do not owe them anything more than what is in your contract (which, presumably, is less than 4 weeks!). 4 weeks is fine.

Contract? In-house?

I'm in house now (full time) and new gig would also be in house (full time)

2 weeks is fine tbh. I just left a three-person team right after the GC did. In house teams can scale up almost instantly by hiring temp lawyers from places like axiom. I agreed to help a bit after i left at an hourly consulting rate and they only needed me for like 20 hours of cleanup stuff.

Hey! My company is giving me a new title (previously: Senior PMM, new: Global Lead of product marketing). The roles are very similar with no material change of responsibilities. it’s the result of a re-org. Also, I’ve been deemed a high performer and approaching my 1 yr review.

In any case, as I’m waiting on the official letter, they have been very vague that they’re will be a compensation increase. In fact, this hasn’t been presented as a promotion. How would you approach this conversation?

Is the MS degree worth the $? Or is it just a fancy stamp to put on your LinkedIn?

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

My background is in tech transactional. I joined a cybersecurity SaaS startup at the end of last year and now also handle more generalist matters in addition to all things commercial-related. I have a number of books on contracts that I’ve found super helpful over the years (The Tech Contracts Handbook, A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Sign Here, etc.). Can anyone recommend books they’ve found helpful for L&E matters, privacy matters, product matters, or marketing/advertising matters?

I’ve been in an in-house role since the beginning of the year and just gave 2 weeks’ notice to leave for a much better paying and better titled position. The response has been very petty, to the point that I’ve been called unprofessional even after I asked the hiring attorney whether I could give longer notice at the current company’s request. I’m currently at a medium sized tech startup. I was interviewing for a role that would be a bump in pay and title at a multinational public F50 company. At first, the hiring manager and head of legal were very complementary about my experience. Almost too much so. After a week of interviews with the team (softball-esq), I was informed that if I wanted to join, they would bring me on at a lower title. I’m not sure about comp yet. But if comp is still an increase + experience at a public..
