I would say not too big of a learning curve. A lot of the actions are pretty similar to excel (filtering, formulas, etc). You could probably get a basic workflow up and running within a day. Things that I felt were the hardest things to learn were the unique ways Alteryx deals with data (multi-row formula tool, macros, etc)
It's definitely different but you get the most out of Alteryx by knowing what it's capable of doing. Most people who use excel only know the basic functions and don't even realize there are tools out there that could make your life 10x easier. Same goes for Alteryx. So in theory, if you know how to better leverage excel and then translate that to Alteryx you'll be better off than a basic Alteryx user.
I would classify my Excel skills as "Advanced" as well. I started learning Alteryx by watching a Udemy course and then decided I needed to actually get in the tool and start trying to build workflows based on Excel reports I already had. It was a little slow going at first, but mostly intuitive. The formulas tripped me up a little at first (not equals being != vs. <>) But it's fairly easy to pick up and Alteryx has a great community and google is your friend! I now find complex formulas to be easier in Alteryx than in Excel. After a few weeks/months recreating workflows from my Excel reports, I went back and did the Alteryx training again and picked up so much more the 2nd time around now that I was familiar with it.
Alteryx is a powerhouse and has literally made my life so much easier! You just have to start (and start with the basics) and check your workflows after each step (in the beginning) to make sure you're reaching the desired outcome.
I don't think I really answered the question.
For me, my Excel skills translated extremely well into Alteryx. It's the same with Excel, you can get by on the basics (and do some amazing things) and then learn how to do the more complex things as you need them. You don't need to know "everything" to get started and have it be very useful for you!
