How much of this business is about pure talent vs hard work? Don’t you feel like some people just have “it” and don’t have to put in the insane hours to get better at their craft?

Personally, I think it's dangerous to tell people they have "it." I've pulled off too many last-minute projects by chance or having "it," but there's always that impending feeling that one day I just won't crack it. Then again, maybe that fear is what drives "it"? Whatever it is, it's worked so far (knock on wood), and my process looks like this:

Brainstorm
Procrastinate x10
Fear of failure + impending deadline kicks in
Work fast + furious
Somehow pull it off
= Momentary euphoria reinforces process

It's true, I can totally coast on 90% of projects, do in an hour what takes others days. I have Lions and Pencils but I'm totally stuck career-wise because the sad truth though is neither work nor talent matter as much as a silver tongue and political smarts.

My boss has said many times before that half of selling work through is simply endurance. True, the harder you work the better and faster you get. But sometimes just being the creative team that sticks it out the longest (not giving up through internal rounds, client rounds, testing, etc) will get you the spot.

There's too much competition for someone to be successful on talent alone. I've met very talented people who never got very far. Hard work (or rather hunger) always wins. Besides, you never really know you got "it" until you've come up with a hundred more ideas to compare against "it".

Talent is painting the Sistine chapel. Making an ad is problem solving with an occasional lucky stroke of genius that can be improved with years of hard work. Good taste also helps.

I'm kind of obsessed with this topic. I see people who just effortlessly whip up ideas, creative, design, copy while I'm sitting on my ass brainstorming for hours. I'm like, f*ck man, how do I get "there"?

Talent only goes so far. Without the hard work the execution will almost always fail. Gotta have them both, if not in the same person then on the same team.

I think it's mostly hard work, but talent or having "it" (or at least something vaguely resembling "it") definitely factors in at some point. I've met some creatives who are insanely hard workers but who just don't seem to be on the same page when it comes to what makes a good concept or a smart execution. And when I say "on the same page," I know this entire industry is subjective, but I mean it more in a broader sense — if you keep striking out no matter who you're presenting to or what you're working on, I don't think hard work will necessarily fix that.

I hate the word talent. I think it's complete BS.

It's all about how you sell your work. If you can't articulate your ideas in a quick, pretty way then you're fucked whether you're talented or not.

Any in-house attorneys ever consider going into (or back to) private practice at a firm? What are your pro/con arguments? What terms would you consider most important in your decision to go to a firm? For context - I'm 15 YOE and have worked in government, a very large firm, and most recently in-house. My firm experience wasn't good, but that firm is a machine and doesn't treat attorneys well. Appreciate all the great perspectives from this group.

Have 2 or 3 funds such as FSCSX, FSRPX, FBALX etc. that are good to decent in returns, but relatively higher expense ratio of 0.5% and higher. About 20k in investments between these funds. Worth flipping them over for lower cost S&P500 or Growth index funds?
It will be subject to capital gain tax (long term) that I'll lose and could have been avoided helping in compounded growth.
What would you recommend?
TIA.

Today the partner told me he thinks I have executive function issues. “Do you know what that is?”

I acted like I didn’t know and just ran to the bathroom and cried. I feel like I’ve been found out. Everyone tells you not to disclose your EF or ADHD issues and just try to cope, taking for granted older partners don’t know what’s up.

I don’t know what to do.
