If you use often and you enjoy it, I wouldn’t worry. Someone once told me investing in yourself is never a bad call. I do OTF and pay 150 but I go 5 days a week (sometimes twice a day) and it’s the only interaction I get with other people, I look forward to it every day so to me it’s well worth the cost.
I’m in the same boat.. workout classes are pretty much the only face-to-face interaction I get with other people, outside of the video calls that I do at work and with family/friends
People will spend based on what they value. Gym membership for $200 may be too much for the same people who wouldn’t bat an eye spending that eating at restaurants, or on alcohol, or going on vacations.
OP, I think it totally depends on what's important to you. I (24) spend $75 / week on a music lesson because it brings me an incredible amount of joy. That's a lot of money! That being said, there are other factors in my circumstances and lifestyle that allow me to prioritize this:
-I live with a roommate in a very low COL city
-We have a gym in our apt, so no need to spend $ on a fitness membership
-I spend little to no money on alcohol / going out (even pre-COVID)
-I am very fortunate to not have student loans
Music lessons are my first priority with my discretionary income, period, and everything else (eating and drinking out, travel, buying clothes, etc.) is worked into the budget after lessons are accounted for.
My roommate has an Orangetheory membership for a similar price to what you mentioned in your post even though we have a gym at our apt because she loves the group class atmosphere. A coworker (same level at work so same salary) and his wife love traveling internationally and save most of their $ for that.
I think OW1 said it well in that it's all about what you value. What else are you spending discretionary income on? How important is this to you compared to those other things? I don't think it's necessarily unreasonable at all -- personal finance is called "personal" for a reason. It's just a matter of the value you place on Pilates vs. other things that cost money.
I belong to a low budget gym and buy packages to CPY and other studios but I think after covid I’m going to just go all in on CPY to at least get my body back to what it was before all of this. It all depends on what you want!
I’m in Chicago and my gym is about 30/month and CPY unlimited is around 150 I think!
30/mo
$160 a month. Pre covid I had a boxing membership for $106 a month plus $10 a month planet fitness and then I would buy spin packages
I try to keep my budget at $100/month but it’s hard because many of the activities I enjoy (yoga, Pilates) run about that much ($120+/mo) for unlimited monthly memberships. I find it hard to justify buying the unlimited memberships to these specialty studios because I also like workouts that require a gym/gym membership.
$150-200 in the NY area is pretty standard
Was paying $250 for equinox in NYC, but cancelled after covid. Just feel like there are better uses of those funds
That's exactly where I'm at. Canceled a few weeks ago. Using small building gym and got myself a few kettlebells and a TRX instead (which together cost me less than 2 months of Equinox).
private gym membership which includes group personal training (5-10 people in the sessions) $125/ month
LA Fitness to use when I travel $25 a month
Peloton $39/ month
Don’t really look at the money being spent because I workout 6 days a week so it’s worth it to me
10/month...that is all!
$220 at a powerlifting gym with a coach.
I spend $50 a month ($30 for a gym membership and $20 for an online yoga class subscription through ALO Moves)
Yoga studio unlimited for $105/mo, and OTF 8 classes/mo for $109. Right now its $0 since both have been closed in my city.
Rising Star
I’m grandfathered in at LAFitness for 16 a month nationwide, if there isn’t one where I travel, a local planet fitness for 10 bucks a month or another 24 hr gym.
Much depends on where you live and what is available.
I think time can also change what feels like a good cost. I was paying $34/month for 24hr fitness and $35/session for a personal trainer.
Covid happened and my apartment still have no plans to open up the gym. 24hr fitness filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy and closed my closest location. It’s been 4 months and I’ve added so much weight and desperately needed to get back to the gym. The cost has changed for me now because I’m desperate. I just got a $195 membership with Equinox and signing up for $130/session for a PT. Pre covid, I will never have considered paying $200 for a gym membership.
Nothing as I bought my own home gym equipment with the fitness refund we get
240 equinox with all access, nyc base location. If you go to classes consistently, it pays itself off. Pre-covid offcourse. Membership is on freeze currently.
