Lol I wish
If you’re living alone, NYC kind of dictates it for you because most places won’t rent to you if you don’t make at least 40 times the amount of rent in a year. So with your salary, $3000 and under is what most landlords will be okay with.
My aim has always been to pay the least rent for what I need to make me happy at that life stage. For example, I was happy living in tiny places in good neighbourhoods before I had kids. My priority was saving to buy a house while having money to travel.
So consider asking yourself what you really need and then look for the best deal to get that, instead of thinking about what % of your income you should spend.
This is the way to do it. Live under your means now. Whether that means a longer commute or roommates...
In my opinion, you should be paying around $2,600/month for rent in NYC if you make 120k/year.
Oh interesting
Living alone or with roommates or a partner? And where are you hoping to live? Neighborhood makes a big difference. $120k in nyc doesn’t go all the far. Lived there for 13 years (left last year) so I know!
It will be tough to find your own place for less than $3k in Manhattan or Brooklyn - you would have to go deeper out into Bk or look at other boroughs. If you have to go into an office, you’ll want to factor in what train lines to need too.
Prices may have dropped with the recession tho and I left a year ago.
Also, broker fees are a thing…you either pay the fee or “no fee” spots it’s ultimately in your rent for the most part.
If you’re young and can live with a roommate, I’d suggest it so you can contribute as much as possible to your 401k and also enjoy your life there! It totally depends on your personal preferences tho!
