How much vacation is too much when you have unlimited PTO?

Take 5 weeks at least and don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it 🤗.

Unlimited PTO is such BS. It sounds great on paper but it only benefits the company as most folks end up still only taking about 2 weeks off annually, and it protects the company when people leave so they don’t need to pay out unused accrued PTO. I say plan as though you have 3-4 weeks PTO and use it as though it doesn’t roll over. I did that at my last agency and had planned one longer trip, and the rest were long weekends or around the holidays so it wasn’t as noticeable to management. Other colleagues still only used about 2 weeks.

^ this is the way

I took 18-19 days in the first 8 months of working at a job

They should have a system where they give you a specific number of guilt-free vacation days you can take when you get hired. Even better, it could be written into your contract / offer letter. Then they could increase that number over time with promotions etc as a way to encourage people to stay at the company. ...is anyone writing this down? Feel like we’ve stumbled on an awesome idea here tbh.

likefunny

@AD1 it is not. It’s a secret number you have to guess.

If you have less than a few years of exp. at the place, I’d say 15-20 is pushing it

likefunny

Pfff, I took 25 on my first year.

likefunny

If you don’t book any two big ones back to back, and are careful not to miss big deadlines more than at least once, you can probably get away with 25-30 befor people start to notice. Just be smart. It’s only when you put the work at a disadvantage over and over again that people start to notice

like

Just remember that if you leave an agency with “unlimited PTO” then you’re not getting paid out for the days you don’t take. If you were attempting to negotiate 15-20 PTO days as part of your comp, then that is the bare minimum you should take. Then anything on top of that just make sure you’re scheduling it properly. I typically used the “unlimited” idea to take 1-2 Fridays a month off during the summer months. Or a day or two extra around the big holidays (team bandwidth permitting). Then would take a full week in the spring and a full two weeks off in the summer.

Yep. This is straight up a cost saving move for the companies so they don’t have to deal with large payouts for employees with long tenures.

Broke a record at my last agency and took 31 days off. Just a lot of three day weekends and then 2 good weeks off. DO IT

Someone just booked 3 weeks + all the random ones here and there

I always try and take at least 20 days

I am going to take the same as before, 24 days

At least

I took like 25 days off in the first six months. I’d say ppl take less than what a normal pto policy gives but I take a lot. Single days here and there. Rarely take off whole weeks or two weeks. But as long as the work is done and or covered then you should be fine. Just make sure you schedule things far in advance when possible. Sometimes I’d convince my boss to let me off by being on call. Never got called but it made the boss feel better about how much I was asking off even tho I had tons of free time

like

Depends on what the account workload is like. Most people will base what is too much based on what peers are taking vacation wise.

Sadly this usually leads to a pissing contest of who's the hardest worker and takes the least amount of vacation.

like

365 days is too much. That’s it.

knew someone who would take a week off every month or two on a very small team. their manager never said anything, but they eventually got laid off.

on a three person team, when you’re the newest hire (less than a year), averaging a week off every month and a half, it’s a lot. you’re screwing over your team at that point.

like

I'd say over 6 weeks looks like you're starting to take advantage, but it really depends on the place. We were something like 21 days before the switch so I tell my team that's the bare minimum they should take.

Had another AD help my CW on a brief while I was on PTO for a couple of days, and is now refusing to get off the project and letting me do my job. I'm all for collaboration and appreciate the three hours he worked on it, but it's getting to the point that he's trying to steamroll me out of my own team and project by not letting me have any input on my own work. It's starting to really impact the output and dynamics. What do I do?

Left a job in government (prosecution), currently at a mid-size firm. I’m really starting to not only hate law firm life, but the practice of law generally. Is this part of the transition? I left my last job because I was on-call 24/7. Now I’m 24/7 again but due to billable requirements. I have no hobbies, no free time, and only spend about an hour/day with my kids. Not sure I want this life. At least I had insane PTO for govt work.

Anyone dealt with your sibling getting divorced and the SIL fallout? My brother is going though a divorce and it is ugly. She is saying he is “unfit” (he is not). He has a 32 yr old who I am very close to, and a 12 yr old who is my goddaughter. His ex was my bff and now she says he is an unfit father and trying to take away his parental rights. I am stunned. It has fractured us beyond what I thought possible. Do I stay neutral for the nieces? Do I shout at the top of my lungs he is a good guy?
