How much would you charge to do some contract work for a company that doesn’t yet need a full-time GC but wants some part-time help? I’m ex-biglaw now in a very wlb-friendly in-house job. A friend approached me about this and asked what I’d charge. I’m thinking somewhere around 200/hour but really have no concept of what would be appropriate.

If you’re in-house W2, it’s very difficult to have other clients. One thing that comes to mind is malpractice insurance. It’s also difficult to have a contract to only provide services after hours. What if an emergency comes up? (Not a real emergency, but with the business thinks is an emergency).

Could be worthwhile to go from a W2 to a 1099 contractor (assuming no equity grant.) Essentially being outside counsel for both. Great tax benefits for you…

Not hard to get malpractice insurance for moonlighting ime

Location will matter here. I think $200 is way too little.

I do some fractional GC and HR consulting, and I adjust for size of company, funding stage, location and scope of work.

The lowest I charge ever is $350/hour and usually when I do that, I tell people that's a friends and family rate.

like

high end startup counsel are very expensive they just tend to only collect around liquidity events. You could do something similar by charging $350 and deferring half of it to the next liquidity event, or negotiating for a lower rate and taking some equity

$200 sounds way too low, especially to cover malpractice insurance (which you 1000% need to have in this situation). Depending on the market, I’d be looking at more like $4-500 (with friendly billing).

like

Thanks. I’ll get some malpractice insurance quotes to see what that would look like

Are you allowed to moonlight or are you thinking about doing so on the down low?

I would clear it with my boss but not anticipating any issues due to the very wlb-friendly nature of my job (so as long as it’s after work hours shouldn’t be an issue) and the clients are in different, not remotely competitive industries.

I’ve been wanting to start looking at job listings for a new position but I get SO nervous about interviews that it holds me back. I’m usually not a socially anxious person and can talk to anybody, but for some reason professional interviews are crippling for me. I know I should just go into it like a normal conversation but I’m so focused on being impressive, articulate and professional that my true personality gets buried under that mask. Any suggestions?

Need an objective opinion - I’m 29 so generally the men I have dated have been 3-8 years older, well established in their careers and financially secure. Most often they paid for dates and after several dates, I would pick up the tab or divide up expenses (ie. pay for the hotel while they paid for the tickets for a weekend away etc). I just started dating a guy who is 3 years younger and in dental school. (Cont’d below)

Hello Fishes! How’s Nagarro’s yearly hike? I saw in an earlier thread that it’s amount based (like 1.5, 2, 2.5 lac). But just confused how will it be applicable to a junior resource with 5 lpa and a senior resource with 30 lpa. Is that the amount mentioned above is same for all employees? If so, it’s unfair to the senior resource with 30 lpa to get the same hike as that of a junior resource, not based on previous ctc. Or Is it based on some percentage of prev ctc? Please help me understand! TIA

So, I started working full-time at a retail store for clothing and accessories and after a brief dispute with my supervisor (my bike broke down which made me come in 20 minutes late to y shift) they told me that it seems like working is not my priority, so to make it easier on me I would only get 20 hours a week. Things are tight as it is, I can't start working half-time. Please someone share some advice or any job opportunities you've seen out there

Do you think it’s a bad time to job search? I’m currently in a role I actually enjoy with pretty good work/life balance and management that seems to like me, but the pay from what I can tell is well below market for talent, and the company is cutting costs so much that I don’t see them fixing the gap or giving us good bonuses or anything anytime soon (F500 level company by revenue for ref). That said, I’d hate to leave for more money only to get worked to death or laid off.
