How often do you check your emails throughout the day?

I leave my email open from 8:00am-7:00/8:00 pm. Once I leave the office, the email is off. Any after-hours requests will be addressed the following working day, in order of importance. I realize that scandalizes some people, but that’s also the culture of my firm. We actually practice work-life balance, instead of paying lip service to it.

Constantly, except for the weekend, then it's only a couple times a day. Luckily I have a work phone and a personal phone and I get to keep them separate.

Every hour, or even more often than that.

Hi -

So I got hired to build out the data function of my company. But I’ve noticed that there are certain leadership members that don’t seem to respect my function nor think data is that important. Has anybody faced this problem? Any advice?

Any of you manage WFH / telecommute more than 50% of the time? When I was an associate, you hardly saw the principal/owner. Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.

I have a background in m&a, venture capital, private equity and commercial contracts for athletes (current job at a sports agency). Hey I'm a solo Attorney who does business law. Until now I've never litigated. However, it is something I would like to start doing. Does anyone have any advice on what to read or look to in order to be as prepared as possible. CA attorney if that helps. Thank you in advance.

For those who are more of a general practice (solo/small firm) - how do you know what type of cases you’ll enjoy doing and actually know what needs to be done? Example: from probate, to civil ligation, to real estate/property, to family law, to criminal, etc.; they are similar in some senses but vary tremendously as well. How do you juggle cases that you aren’t too familiar with or that you don’t know much about the area of law? Do you just wing it? Look to mentors for help?

Any suggestions for an organizational/organization expert, coach, or someone that helps with getting firms organized? We need to be more efficient and have better systems in place.

Brief problem: We feel that we (partners) are unorganized, and as a result our staff is following the same disorganized structure and we’re not getting as much work/tasks completed as we should.

Many efforts to get into big law have been to no avail mainly because I only have LLM from Emory Law and my other law degrees are foreign. I have decided to start my own law firm and I aim to make it as international as possible, thus making my supposed academic disadvantage my strength. I am considering corporate, M&A, entertainment and sports as areas of practice. Please advise accordingly. Thank you!

Q for associates in boutique litigation firms: When you’ve drafted a complaint/motion/brief to be filed, do the partners allow you to actually sign the filing in your own name? For context, I’m a new associate at a class action firm where there’s ample opportunity to do substantive work & pursue your own case ideas from the get go. Today, I’m getting ready to file a complaint I drafted when a partner told me to remove my signature & insert his instead. Is this standard?

Question re: salary. I’m thinking about accepting an offer at a small (4-6 attorneys) transactional firm. I would primarily be working on NDAs for clients. The role sounds great (no billable hours, fully remote, flexible hours/ can work from anywhere); however, the salary is $70K. I’m a new attorney, with only one year of experience. Does this salary seem low? If so, any advice on what someone in my position should ask for?

I am evaluating an opportunity to join a small firm (4 attorneys plus staff) as an associate but not on salary. Rather, I’d keep a portion of the firm’s collections on matters I work on, and I can choose my rate for my own clients (and would give a portion of those collections back to the firm). Sounds like in time I’d be able to participate in profit sharing program. Curious if others have worked in a similar situation and what pointers you have.

How do you balance wanting to be the “go to” person who gets it all done, no matter what, and feeling like you are taken advantage of because of that?
