I don’t feel unsafe and take the usual precautions when I walk around at night as any woman would in a major city.
A1, that might be the case but is irrelevant for my day to day life here. Right now, here in Chicago, I need to take precautions. Doesn’t matter what the statistics are nationally.
Since the recent uptick in muggings in my neighborhood, I carry the bare minimum when I’m out after dark-1 credit card, ID, and health insurance card ins cheap card case, plus phone and keys with a birdie alarm in my hands. If I don’t think I’ll need an ID, I stick my credit card in my bra. I also have nicer Diamond earrings I’m not wearing right now.
I walk quickly and keep 1 airpod in (which I know I should probably drop).
I have also started asked Uber’s to wait for me to get into my building and every driver has been happy to.
Honestly, a lot more lately. I lived alone in the south loop during the height of the pandemic & was super overwhelmed when I saw shootings in the neighborhood and got my phone stolen on the cta (brown line which is supposed to be the safest line). I would be a nerd lame and say if you can stay home as much as possible do it & run your errands in the daytime & if you have to go out, Uber or Lyft. I wouldn’t walk around past midnight.

Conceal carry
For the first time ever I do feel unsafe in Chicago. I noticed that I am constantly on the defensive and assessing everything around me at all times, to the point of paranoia. Constantly looking over my shoulder. I’ve also started to empty my wallet from personal important memorabilia and high limit credit cards when I have to go through downtown, and only carry one debit card and the ID. I also keep a $20 stashed away on me somewhere in case I’m robbed of belongings and need to take a cab home.

Wasn't it some time in the last 3 months (it's linked within this bowl, I think) that the car jacker had the guy get out of his car, casually shot the guy in the head, and drove off.
Get that "just comply" sh*t out of your head.
I don’t take CTA after 8 pm unless I’m with friends. Uber just about everywhere that isn’t a 20 minute or less walk. I don’t walk with headphones on at night. I also walk really fast and don’t stop for anyone who I don’t know.
I don't feel unsafe but am always aware of the possibility of a robbery if that makes sense. I'm aware of my possessions and my surroundings and stay on major, populated streets or take cabs if alone at night.
I've always considered it the somewhat casual cost of living in a major city. I'm more aware and alert than if I lived my life getting in and out of a car all the time in the suburbs, but that doesn't bother me that much.
At the height of the pandemic and riots, I was approached and threatened with my life in one of the safest areas of Chicago. Ever since then, I carry pepper spray everywhere I go, and it's one of the best non-lethal defenses you can have (and very easily concealable, and legal if 18+). Also, get your concealed carry license. You don't have to be a 2A nut to want to protect your life. Realistically, you'll never use a firearm for self defense - but at least in the one time you might have to, you'll have it. Takes a training course and a couple hundred dollars, but easily one of the best decisions I made. Also for the love of God, never walk around with your phone out and your attention glued to your phone. Lack of awareness makes an attractive target.
Be aware. That is your best defense. Don’t be on your phone. If something feels off, trust your instincts. Look up and look around. I carry pepper spray for my sanity.
I carry a glock
