Just got a job offer from Accenture and have my H1-B visa transfer approved. I spoke with my current employer manager and client yesterday and they are requesting me to serve a 3 week notice instead of 2 owing to an important release. I also want to separate from my current employer on good terms, but how would I communicate this to my new employer? Do they usually defer joining date by a week or 2?Accenture
Weekly! Typically the meeting follows the structure of
1.) BS / Catching up
2.) Work related problems
3.) Work related wins
4.) How we are getting better this week (AKA, solving the listed problems^)
5.) Personal life update
Following this format is KEY to getting people that will go to war for you.
Thanks for sharing this! I don’t know how to smoothly go about 1:1s sometimes. This is helpful.
Biweekly, typically discuss:
1. How the day/week has been going
2. Current projects and any blockers, timelines, etc.
3. Any company updates, emails to look out for, department updates on their end
4. The both of us commiserating on how frustrating performance management is within our department
5. Catching up on life outside of work
At one point I had 2 managers. One of them wanted them bi-weekly, the other weekly. Discussions were similar. Talked about whatever’s going on with current projects, updates, sometimes used it as a working session, discussed performance, personal growth, fun talk, vent, lots of stuff.
What do you want to speak about in these meetings? As a manager I try to make them less about the day to day and broader brush strokes — and a chance for team members to let me know if they need anything?
Weekly - it's not always very intense but it's a great time for me to let them know issues I'm having on the team if need be without "complaining" all the time. Sometimes we check in on the progress of what I've been working on.
Weekly. And tbh it feels more like a ‘check up’ than a ‘check in.’
Biweekly but I wish weekly because biweekly you miss out on things that were more time-sensitive but it's not long enough in between for you to do any real planning, at least in my opinion.
Monthly - honestly, it's not really helpful and I don't get much out of it. He asks me how projects are going and I give a general overview, and that's about it.
Once every 2 weeks. I update him on what I've been up to (a TL;DR of my snippets!) and he sometimes updates me on new issues or opportunities I could/should address.
We're long-time friends and have worked together, on and off, in many different roles (as peers or boss/report) for 12+ years, but right now my job's quite different from his team's overall task.
I report to him because too few other highly-technical L8+ managers nearby in the org chart -- the rest of the team which I TL reports to somebody else...
In previous years we've tried having me report to somebody lower than my level, and/or NOT highly technical, but that's REALLY hard to make work -- how does an L6 mgr make a good perf calibration case for an L8 IC report, esp. if mgr's never written a line of code and IC writes and maintains code on 70% of their time?!-).
I meet weekly with my manager for at least 30 min. Sometimes our meetings go for 1.5 hours. Really just depends on what's going on. We have a shared 1x1 doc we work off of. We both write down stuff we want to discuss prior to the meeting. It's great bc if have lots to discuss we keep on track and if we have less to discuss we can end the meeting early. We also use the time to talk about professional development, organizational structure of team/company if anything is changing, fun stuff, family, and whatever else!
Typically weekly unless something more urgent comes up. If we are not able to meet live, we slack or email (as long as you’re staying in touch and communicating). We discuss the top priorities, concerns, and questions top of mind. It’s also important to build rapport and to get to know each other, especially if we’re all on zoom!
