How often does having a job in public accounting give you anxiety. Have you had to see a doctor about it?

I know at least 5 people (not at my current firm, prior) who have had to go on medication. I would recommend that if the stress is that bad you reconsider where you're doing it at the very least.

How do you even have time to go to the doctor

Only three months into the job and thinking of seeing a doctor already. Just feel like I suck at audit, suck at company admin compliance, suck at communications, etc. Are we just often too hard on ourselves.

Generally people who go into public accounting are bright and high achievers. They've been really good at being educated and have probably not worked a real office job. They go into the work force and get a really big kick of reality. It's a hard environment to transition to for a lot of people but it's really not that bad

If you've been told already you should step your game up but if you haven't then you should just say so

I have it and am leaving for industry now

My own two senses - its not heart surgery I do my part, put in my best and at some point the report will go out. Its not personal just business, give yourself some unplug time and know that you can have another job if this is not for your. I am anti medication that alters my brain, granted some folks need it but should not be driven by work.

I was getting several anxiety attacks after starting last year (with the last one that I had being in middle school before I knew what an anxiety attack was). They have since died down now that I have gotten better at the job so I don't think I will need medication - we'll see how the next busy season goes 😕 I was this close to seeing a doctor, but was able to talk to someone at work, and the anxiety attacks subsided, so I have yet to get medication. That being said, I still have moderate anxiety that I probably shouldn't.

I have work anxiety basically 24/7. I was prescribed klonopin for flights (travel anxiety) and after speaking to my doctor, ended up having my prescription continued due to work anxiety. Hardly ever take it as I don't want to become dependent and also it makes me VERY tired and out of it, but it is nice to have for the occasional night when I come home from work completely stressed/anxiety ridden and just want to temporarily forget about work and just go to sleep.

I didnt really have anxiety before but ever since I started working, I've definitely developed it and sometimes I get little anxiety attacks when my senior tries to rush stuff. And I don't want to go on anxiety meds because I know that will be no good *sigh*

Sad but true

@pwc I think this profession just tends to collect people who are prone to being stressed out already and I think sometimes we forget to take a step back and realize that no one will die if we make a mistake. P.S. I doubt seriously that you suck as much as you feel like you do, if at all - in my experience most people who do have no idea.

It's ok to suck. Just as long as you don't keep sucking and you improve.

I agree GT1- I have no complains against those who want to suck. It takes stamina.

GT1 - I think what you said is very true. Do you have any tips for the transition?

Just that it's fine to not know what's going on. Ask lots of questions and if people aren't helping you find different people

But what if people don't like it when you ask questions and say you should already know this? That also gives me so much anxiety

@Moss Adams 1, one thing I have learned pretty recently is if you don't know something, speak up. For example, my team had no idea that I didn't really know how to write a walkthrough as they didn't know that I had never written one before - they just assumed that I had. People tend to assume wrong sometimes, and when you explain your past experiences (or lack thereof), they tend to be more understanding.

One of my friends started to develop bad anxiety during her first year but it's getting better over time. I'd definitely try to give it some time as some times it can just be a tough transition into such a high pressure job, but if after that time it's still not getting any better, definitely should consider a job switch. No job is worth sacrificing your health over and there's plenty of other opportunities out there!! Don't let it get you down

So stressed about housing in my HCOL area. My landlord has been sending vague emails that they will raise the rent “closer to market” but won’t give a number yet. Similar units in my area are anywhere from $400-$1000 more per month. Im not sure if me and my roommate can afford the rent increase and it’s so frustrating how much power the landlord has to disrupt our lives :(

Had titles of UXD and IXD working on enterprise applications in agencies, mostly related to financial services/asset management. I want to step away & join a product team for SaaS/emerging tech, but I got an offer for a Design Lead role at a financial services company a headhunter submitted me for.

Will accepting it pigeonhole my career? Certainly don’t want to entertain banking or financial services after even if it goes well, but the title will finally move me up to the sr/lead level
