There is no set answer. Some folks assume you’ll just do it immediately, and others figure it will come along in a reasonable timeframe given the task.
I’d suggest when getting an assignment to check on timing or let the senior know when you think you’ll get to it and whether they works with the timeline. If I really need something ASAP, I’ll usually specify that but sometimes it’s implied if the deadline is known to all.
As a senior, if I want to know where a task is at I’ll ask you if you have any questions or when do you think I can review.
A good gauge of whether you are giving enough updates is whether the person asks you for them. If they arent, that means they are happy with your frequency. If they are asking, it means they want more often.
You'll find that more urgent projects will need more frequent updates. And the more you work with someone the less often they will ask as they get comfortable you are on top of things.
today, should I be like, I’m halfway through x, I’ll have it tomorrow? I tend to just way overthink it and have always felt like I’m bothering them or that it’s unnecessary, but I’m trying to improve.. I guess I just feel embarrassed that they’ll be like ‘ugh what’s taking her so long’
