Technically, whatever your firm’s mandatory partner retirement age minus 1. For example, at mine it is 60, so you could make partner at 59 and rock it for a year before you retire.

The question you might be asking is, how old is too old to get full benefits of being a partner, ie when does it financially make sense not to go for partner? To get full retirement benefits of being a partner, you must be fully vested. So you take your required retirement age minus your fully vested period minus 1-2 years of safety, since you may not make it the first year you’re up. Generally this answer is around late 40s.

In IBM , Accenture etc - where it’s a title but you don’t actually become a partner - there is really no upper age . I have seen people in mid 50s making it

In private partnerships - you need 10-12 years of run way to get minimum of what’s possible as upside . So think 48-50 since most have mandatory retirement at 60

Remember: age is just how old I am.

There’s no such thing as too old if that’s what you want, however, the math differs at all the firms if you’re weighing it against say, MD.

I’m sorry, did you just say that retirement age is too old to become a partner? Well, sure. Thanks for that. Don’t think that’s what they were getting at.

40

IMO, 40 but 50 is the max. However, there was someone at my firm that made it at 58. It’s all about what you want from your career.

32F, 10 YOE at two big 4’s in both tech and HC. Tough decision and want input! Options:

1. Offer to go to Deloitte as SM $200k+
2. Admitted to NYU and Columbia full time Bschool programs - no scholarship at either
3. Admitted to Darden w more than half scholarship
4. Offer to go to Two FANGS as a program manager, 150k base, 75k annual equity (non technical role)

I don’t love what I do but seems I could make partner in 3-5 years at D. Having tough time turning down Columbia Bschool or FANG.

Question for B4 PPMD 🐠: what would be some tenets of your approach / experience you would share with someone entering at SM level and aspires to play long and make partner? I understand there isn’t a “formula” or a “playbook” and that the question is purposely open ended, but anything that jumps to mind beyond the obvious would be most helpful. As you can tell, I’m looking for a senior mentor who can share their experience and help avoid some common pitfalls. Thanks in advance 🙏

I've heard a couple of things about how the partner pension amount @ PwC is determined, both similar in approach.

Both calculations I have heard of result in an annuity paid until death, at which point a surviving spouse (if any) receives the annuity.

The first calculation I have heard is that you get 80% of your highest earning year as a partner (e.g. If your best year was $1M, you'd get $800k as an annuity).

The second calculation I have heard is that they look at your three highest earning years as a partner, and take the second highest and you get 100% of that. (e.g if your three highest earning years were $1M, $800k, and $1.2M, you'd receive $1M as an annuity).

Is ANY of this true, or just all rumor? Any PwC partners that can chime in and explain the pension plan fact for fact? Perhaps with sample numbers?
