How people with small kids are managing WFH? I have 18 month old and both of us are in consulting. It's getting almost impossible to keep kid engaged and work. Interested what other parents are doing

How did the kid get into consulting so fast? These analysts keep getting younger and younger

likefunny

Probably one of those 18 month old analysts with $5M who wants to know if they have enough money saved.

I think the accurate answer is simultaneously failing as a parent and an employee.

like

This is the correct response. 5 and 2 year old here, both of us working full time from home, all of us sucking at it equally.

Benadryl?

Staff the kid on a PMO job. Easy utilization. 9-5.

I wouldn't say we're managing it. Literally just trying to survive. My spouse and I take shifts between work calls and parenting our two toddlers. Doing the bare minimum at work, and hoping that it's enough to not get laid off. We're in NJ too, and are paying our nanny but not having her come. I think we'll have to ask her to come by June though, can't take it any longer.

like

Two kids: 2yo and 4mo old. We moved my in-laws into the in-law suite thats attached to our home. We pay my mother in law to help (though she always refuses the money), and my father in law still works so isn’t around that often but will take the 2 year old when he gets home. They pay rent. Very fortunate despite the added stresses of a semi-shared living situation. Will likely build them a tiny house eventually.

With our 4 year old and both my spouse and I trying to work from home, we are really struggling. We've given him too much screen time and are taking turns giving him attention when we aren't on calls. Haven't found any great solutions to this and we really hope as our state looks to reopen they recognize childcare is an absolute necessity.

like

It’s really hard. Keep your head up and give yourself grace. One day at a time.
And if you find any tips & tricks, please share!

I have a 5 month old and 4 year old, my paternity leave is almost over. I think we are going to try to find a nanny until schools open up again/we feel comfortable to send them back.

like

I live in NJ too. We called one of our sons daycare teachers who has been furloughed. We will spend the equivalent of our daycare costs paying her, but I hope it will work into she goes back to the daycare.

Have a 2 yr old, and another due this summer. Both my husband and I alternate calls/schedules. Not sure what we're going to do, but we're going insane too.

like

We hired a daytime babysitter to take care of the kids while we work from home. It’s not ideal and I do worry about outside exposure to virus but we live in the burbs and relatively lower risk city so we decided the risk was worth it for us.

We’ve been paying $100/day 9-5 with one hour lunch break. We live in CA if that helps.

18 mo old consulting already, props!
😜

One year old, both parents in demanding jobs, wife against having the nanny back. I am drowning. I consistently sleep 5 hours per night, and still am falling behind with work. I am losing my sanity.

I don’t but my superiors do. It seems like they break down little by little everyday.

I know someone who gets to be somewhat flexible with hours, so he and his partner get their 8 hours in but have "shifts" for several hours at a time. They make up their work hours in the evenings if they have to

This is what we've been doing. Then we both work at night uninterrupted when the kids go to bed and on weekends. It's brutal.

My sister and brother in law are dealing with male factor infertility. My husband and I had our own infertility journey, so she shares a lot with me. They are Catholic, and he is firmly opposed to IVF, but a series of doctors have been clear that is their only option. While she is not opposed to adoption, she can't put aside the opportunity to be pregnant lightly, especially considering there is no indication of any issue on her side. Anyone been through something similar?

How do people deal with comments from superiors about stopping work at 4:30/5 to pick up kids from daycare? If they log back on at night most nights and always can get work done if busy? Unsure what to even think about this or how to respond. There are no daycares with spots in my area and this one closes at 5. I can’t just not get my kid.

Edit to add: it’s not an option with where we work/our schedules for my husband to get the kid. That would’ve been an easy solution.

Any moms or soon to be moms out there who are self employed/business owners? I stared a firm with three colleagues two years ago and am expecting my first child this spring. We are over the moon but I’m anxious about how I can manage this while not letting my career go down the drain. As a small business owner…maternity leave is not a thing. My husband will take a few weeks off but I’m nervous he’ll go back to work and it will be my career in the toilet. (I’ve expressed them to him!) Any tips?

Does the addition of “(level) II” make a difference to anybody? I am the only marketing communications specialist for a lead child-welfare nonprofit. We oversee four counties in two circuits. Director recently gave me add’l merit-based raise (after my annual raise, been here 14 months) & slight title change to Marketing Comm Specialist II. No plans to add a level 1 (would be lower) specialist but will add level 1 engagement specialist to team. Should I update resume/cards or is this confusing?

I am holding two offers,

Aside from looking at GreatSchools, are there suggestions on how to research public schools? Is it possible to do tours or anything of that nature? Moving to a new city and kid is going into kinder.
