How qualified are you when you apply for an in-house job? So many list bullet point upon bullet point of skills and experience. I often have 1/2 - 3/4, but rarely all. Is this just a “wish list”?

Apply for any role where you satisfy about 60% of the job description. A lot of times those are not written by the hiring manager and are stolen from a bank of descriptions online. I've applied to roles where the description said one thing but the hiring manager described something totally different.

This is helpful. I can’t help but laugh when I see a job seeking 3-6 year lawyer to independently handle M&A deals, HIPAA, HR, FERPA, SEC filings and Irish tax implications in a “fun and unique work environment!”

I've consistently applied to jobs where I was -- on paper -- woefully underqualified. Got offers from two of those places. If it sounds like something you can do and you can at least tie in whatever experience you have to what the posting says, go for it. There is literally nothing to lose.

Not so much an interview tip question, but more a timeline question. Have applied for a role at Deloitte on July 11. The status of my application on the portal has since been updated to “shortlisted” on July 20. I haven’t heard anything about the status of my application other than the updates on the portal. When should I expect to get an update about next steps? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I’m also based in Melbourne, Australia.

I am a young and a woman of color. I am an incoming associate at an established firm in a relatively small city (~80k population). I like the firm very much. I am, however, the only woman of color at my firm. I grew up on the nearby reservation. I have recently been vocal about a local business changing its name. The name venerates an individual who massacred native people. It made the news. Am I ruffling too many feathers? Should I be less vocal now that I will be a lawyer? I feel uncomfortable

Does anyone do trusts and estates at an AmLaw firm? I always thought that was more of a boutique practice area. Was contacted by a recruiter, and while I'm happy with almost everything about where I'm at, the way people discuss AmLaw salaries, I feel like I should consider it since it would probably be a significant jump in salary. I'm at 120k TC, and the only way it's going up is with increased bonuses or share of originations (and I am not a networker).

Curious about non-US attorneys: are you working the crazy hour weeks most of us in the US do? Or are your weeks closer to 40 hours? I hear a lot about the working hour caps, vacation requirements, etc in Europe/Canada. Curious if that flows into legal practice... or if it gets ignored. To clarify—I’m talking about BigLaw. I’m sure there are smaller firms with reasonable hours, the same exists in the US.

How did you get into your area of law? I have been licensed for 5 years and I still don't know where I ultimately want to be. I started as a line attorney and after 3 years, I moved to a non-litigation position working for the state. I feel lost. I have thought about getting MBA to compliment my JD. I was a good litigator but I had trouble turning off my brain and being present with my family when I was a litigator, so I don't think I would want to go back.

Would anyone happen to have any insight on base comp ranges for internal Lateral Attorney Recruiting Managers? Particularly for firms between 250-500 attorneys? I love my current firm, and have 5 years of experience within lateral associate, counsel and partner recruiting; but, considering how much money I save the firm with each non-search-firm attorney placement, I feel like there is higher compensation opportunity elsewhere. Thank you!

I added a well recognized litigator in my area at a top firm on LinkedIn... reason being is that I’m a first year in litigation and hope to accomplish at least half the things he has in my career. So it’s interesting to see his takes on things when he engages on a post.

I’m tempted to send him a personal message, not for a job or anything, but honestly just to ask “how he did it” and what advice he might give.

Is there any harm in this? Don’t wanna be annoying.
