Typically the candidate profiles and skill sets are different. If you can think with clarity, are process oriented, and work well in ambiguity, then you are a potential candidate for management consulting.
No raw nerves struck and sorry if my comment was harsh but your guidance to this person is just wrong. Many audit people do in fact move to management consulting and your comments make it seem like it’s unrealistic given the inability of audit and tax people to leave a positive impression in your eyes or require a different skill set. Maybe your experiences are limited and you don’t have a full appreciation of the extent people do move from audit to consulting but it does happen quite often (even more these days given the current job market). Also, I’ve seen many people who have had a lot of success in consulting after moving and are currently partners leading large accounts. If this person has a desire to move to consulting, there are multiple avenues to get there (eg transfer internally, recruit at another Big 4- I know of a few examples of auditors recently moving to Deloitte and KPMG, or moving to a non Big 4 firm).
Apply to Deloitte Consulting rn since they’re hiring like crazy and let too many people go during the pandemic
Sorry misread the comment, thought you said you applied haha. But yes, planning to apply to Deloitte!
Depends where you’re applying, an MBA may make sense
Base on your YOE, you’ll likely come in as an analyst. You can expect about 3-8% base comps and 3-8% promotion comps. Maybe market adjustment 3-10% very very rare.
Do the math, that wouldn’t get you to 170k for a very very long time.
Buddy of mine did it with a brief stop in industry. He also went to a new firm when he made the switch.
Think of industry as your clients, non consulting etc, not necessarily the role within the company
