SMs are glorified EAs of MDs.
Kiss up to?
Puh-leeze 🙄🙄
Most SMs only use people and then move on. Found very few SMs who genuinely care for the team. While I believe being SM is hard as they are under enormous pressure, I particularly don’t like the ones who only want to use the people junior to them
SM is my favorite level of people to interact with, granted they are good people. They know a lot, and are busy, but typically can handle it all. They are generous, can teach, still learn and progress, but are also effective.
I have noticed many MDs lose the sense of generosity. Managers lack the sense of comfort and confidence SMs have. And consultants and below just don't know as much.
I like to befriend them more than any other level. I love SMs.
It’s my personal opinion: I don’t see it as kissing up if I like you as an individual with a friendly personality who will challenge me to grow myself. I don’t care for your title as much as your personality.
If you have an abrasive personality, I’ll still work with you and get the job done, but I would not want to put myself through that experience again.
My SM is the bomb! Supports me in any way. Can’t ask for a better one. Gives me an honest feedback. Also provides a different opinion on the matter than my own as he sees the bigger picture better than I can. Review calls, bonus, sponsorship, training, the works...my SM is legit dope. I can talk to him bout anything under the sun. Can you top it?
It's been weird... I'm sure indicative of nothing... But at PwC I liked the partners, managers, and seniors and mostly hated directors and consultants; and at Deloitte I've liked the MD's, SM's and consultants but mostly hated partners, seniors, and managers. Director at PwC was by far the worst of any group, minus one.
A toady or lackey to their partner from my experience.
✊🏻 How’s that feel?
My issues at least with the ones in my firm is you folks are so disconnected with the implementation realities of solution that you invariably setup your teams for failure. You go all out and spit ball in front of client to impress or sell stuff to them without having the appreciation for what needs to be done to deliver the solution.
You should instead focus on engaging your teams and coming up with the best solutions and then offering the same to our clients.
I only know one. Learn how to manage a project. I’m not sucking up to you, but if you’re honest and transparent with me, I might do more for you than I’d do for another SM.
Coming from a small consulting firm, I’m struck by how much of their time seems to be taken up by administrative stuff. Must be a mental shift if you got into consulting because you actually like consulting itself, but then find yourself doing fifty performance reviews. Any thoughts OP?
Kiss up to? This is such a strange post (and I'm up for SM next year). What's wrong with you OP? You seem very insecure.
