How should I deal with an overly ambitious AAE who says yes to everything/creates extremely aggressive timelines?

I have to chew everything she bites off, and I'm tired of it.

Talk to your boss and see how they would like to approach this. I would suggest that you both speak to her AD and provide comprehensive, constructive feedback and outline how this affects the client relationship and internal team morale. Her AD should also be checking in with you or your CD regularly to check on how projects are moving along. If that’s not a recurring meeting, make it one.

Do you have PMs? Producers? Get them involved as well. But this needs to be flagged early, it’s completely unacceptable for a junior Account person to be doing this. It sets very poor precedent for the future.

Talk to your CD, determine a game plan, find time with the AD. Then schedule regular calls with the AD to discuss feedback.

Talk to her then talk to her boss. Her boss should be checking her time lines anyway. She might just not understand the process so early in her career.

As an AAE, you don't do ANYTHING without your supervisor reviewing all emails & correspondence. Often times in the beginning they will give you the direction of what to do.....my sup would have me do her "dirty" work bc I was naive. Don't assume it's all the AAE. I had relatively little power in the decisions being made.

like

I totally would do this but I've heard through the grapevine that she doesn't take feedback from people she doesn't respect. And it also sounds like she doesn't respect our CD or our AD. But then again, that's grapevine info.

Talk to her supervisor 100%

Update: she sought me out to talk. I ended up not talking to her boss because her boss is leaving (she doesn't know yet). I told her she had a fantastic opportunity to build the account the way *she* wanted it built, and that might help her prove her worth for this promotion she thinks she should have. I don't think she's currently ready, but hopefully she'll listen. Thanks for the advice, guys! The accounts-side perspective was great to hear

like

That’s great - it’ll make her more receptive to your feedback (hopefully)! One important thing I learned early on in Account Management is, though the role is supporting your clients and their business, it’s being supportive (and sometimes protective) of your internal teams too It’s hard to grow without developing cross-functional partnership 🤷🏻‍♀️

She really wants to be promoted to AE. She came on as an AC about 2 years ago and got promoted to AAE 8 months ago. I first worked with her on a volunteer project where she continually dropped timelines (even kicked things off AFTER they were due and forced my creative team to pick up the slack on account of event launches). Then she moved to my team by shitting all over OUR timelines like she was some great organized blessing to our team. Now she's creating unrealistic timelines, saying yes to everything and leaving early/coming in late but sending emails at 1 am so she sounds like she's really putting in the time. What do I do? Talk to her boss (a remote AD)? Talk to my boss (CD who doesn't like to rock the boat)? We have no VP of accounts, lol.

like

AD does the job remotely because we acquired his agency (in another state) and offered that to him. No other AD at our agency works remotely.

Feel free to message me if you want more info!

like

You don't know what the AAE does on their end. If you can't keep up with the timelines, then maybe find something more laid back. For all you know, the client is dictating those timelines. Regardless, stick with it or jump ship. It's the nature of some accounts.

like

Another update: she got promoted anyway, so maybe she's more incentivized to act that way. Also her boss put in her notice.

This is a hard one to talk through because there’s always another side. Most good account people are ambitious and realistic in timelines in terms of what is going on keeping in mind other projects as well client needs. I do agree that No AAE is sending things out with more senior person looking over
