How should we think about transitioning back to business as usual post COVID? I'm worried that people will be used to WFH and although might want to come into the office, it might change the dynamic.

Why does WFH worry you?

Like it or not, the memes and jokes are there about WFH because they’re largely true. People stop dressing themselves, some bury themselves in the work but most see more distractions. Engineers say they’re “more productive” from home but it’s been proven that defect rates increase under those circumstances. Management consultants (even on this app) brag about having things like oscillating fans move their mouse automatically to make it “look like” they’re working. Everyone wants to be treated like an adult and say they can do their work from anywhere but as long as this type of stuff happens there will always be a healthy amount of skepticism. That said I am doing better at home than I thought I would, but still can’t wait to get back to the office. I fully expect to get push back on some of my team coming back to the office full time, and admittedly this has changed my mind a bit. But I’d need to hire for it rather than just letting my current team do it unilaterally.

Disagree on the jokes thing - jokes are funny because they’re true haha. Couldn’t agree more on the expectations, though. But with respect, you lose collisions when you WFH full time - collaboration doesn’t go away and individual contributors don’t matter (meaning do what you want). I’m considering doing a forced WFH week every quarter because I agree it’s allowed us all to refocus on long term strategies, but wfh as a permanent engagement - the jury’s still out for me.

There are already some good thoughts here on the comments! I think some things regarding WFH will forever change as the experiment has been run in full force whether we like it or not. So depending on the industry or circumstance there may be more of a mix of face to face and WFH virtual meetings and even projects. As Partner 1 commented, as humans are social, i think many of us "can't wait to get back to the office". I suspect WFH will be more in the mix and give more flexibility and even help reduce expenses, but it should be thought through as to what is the healthy split? It is clear there are pros and cons of WFH. Again, planing from the future back about it as part of the how things will be 12-24 months from now and beyond is a very useful exercise.

WFH isn’t something to be scared or suspicious of. 90% of the time when I’m in the office, I’m on the phone. I think most consulting gigs can be done from home. It’s more a matter of trust than anything. There are specific times when I feel collaboration is much easier in person, but I feel with the right discipline and technology, they can be minimized as well.

Sounds like you’re more of an individual contributor here - and I’d completely agree - feels like your work is fairly flexible and the collisions are actually more distracting than helpful when you’re in the office.
